I'm not going to judge the guy, but by his own admission, he only saves $33K over the course of 4 years doing this. Even if we assume that's after tax savings and he'd have to make $48K (guesstimate) in gross salary, that means he's only "saving" $12K a year doing this. On one hand I think the invonvenience of living in a van is not worth saving $12K a year, especially if he only has 22K in student loans while making $100K+ a year in salary. On the other hand he also says that he wakes up at 5:30 and works on personal projects after work until 8-9pm so he really doesn't need an apartment, just a comfortable bed to sleep at night, and paying $1K just to sleep at night does seem kind of steep. My line of thinking it's his life, he can do with it whatever he wants as long as it doesn't cause problems for anyone else which it seems like it doesn't.

Honestly, I think his savings estimates are low. He likely needs a car anyway, so he has one...it just happens to be his bedroom too. But at least he can drive the truck and get basic needs.

If he rents, he'll still need renters insurance. Will want a couch. Likely wants a TV, and now you need furniture to put a TV on. Plus plates to cook on. And electric, gas, water, and internet bills. If you have more space you are more apt to fill it with more shit. I'd guess his total savings are much more than he estimated.

Makes sense to me. I'm guessing he wasn't going to get much poonani to begin with, so no real need for an apartment. Once he meets a chick that doesn't care he lives in a truck, he can just move in with her.

I like this story though, I don't think it's story-worthy news. More people should do this sort of thing instead of complaining about having skewed debt/asset ratios.

He sees the big picture that debt tied to no asset drags down your borrowing power and ultimately your income. My wife's school loans were 7.5% APR and were reduced to 6.5% after a year of being out. We paid those loans off fast because they weren't much better than having a bunch of debt on a CC or something....

He is what? 23? This is like a grand adventure for him & it sounds like he plans to save so he can do a lot of traveling in the future. I do think he blabs too much on his blog if he is trying to remain unobtrusive in the workplace. If he is a great programmer I can see his employer letting this slide under the radar but too much publicity of his lifestyle might not be such a good thing.

Don't get me wrong, I love SF, but I would never call it clean. If I was homeless, it would be near the top of my list for destinations (probably behind SD and Hawaii).

This town is filthy beyond belief.

I also witnessed a crazed homeless person stop a car in the street and scream obscenities at it for 5 minutes while wielding a bent golf club the other day. I'd be lying if this and similar things weren't a regular occurrence.

The memory that I have of walking around downtown SF is....dog shit and homeless people everywhere.

That's not dog shit.

Downtown is certainly like that, and even though I know it is misleading, SF, in truth, isn't as filthy as one assumes it to be if their only exposure to the city is Downtown, Tenderloin, etc. Which, of course, is all the majority of visitors will ever see.

Just step into a place like Cole Valley, and it's blocks and blocks of city that is as clean as any I have ever seen. (well, if you can consider Yuppies "clean," which is certainly debatable). They are even infecting the Mission now. D:

While the article says a lot, it does leave out a lot. It does say he eats breakfast, lunch and dinner at Google's campus, but it also says he likes to eat out at nice restaurants a lot too. That alone could be $1k+ a month depending on how often he does that.

Good for him. He could be crying about how everyone fucked him over with student loans.

"I didn't know the papers I was signing meant I had to pay the money back! I can't read!"

So much this. The guy is the polar opposite of the folks whining about their student debt after making a slew of poor choices. How can ATOT not applaud that?

No, it's chilly in SF and all of NorCal at night, all year-long.

The coast always seems to be chilly... It is odd driving in during the summer and experiencing ~60 degrees near the bay bridge.
But when I was leaving... I left the metro area and 15 miles inland up a mountain where it's 100+ (in a traffic jam)

You know your homeless destinations, sir. My estranged brother, after being homeless for years in San Diego, saved up enough cash for a ticket to Hawaii where he continues to be "outdoors" in better environs.

Haha...maybe I'm a homeless guy at heart.
