It basically lets them avoid paying $2k rents charged in the region. Wonder if the stories are true about the average Google employee not having the cool looking lifestyle implied in the videos we see of the wonderful environments in Google buildings. For example maybe most Google employees don't have work spaces as nice looking as the ones seen in some videos.

Did some web searching and looks like the story is only a couple days old and didn't find anything in AT forums about it. Just trying to avoid reposts.

You almost have to wonder what it's going to take to get the tech companies to flee SV. Even if it's just to Oakland.

FYI, real estate prices are driven by what people can pay. If people can't pay it, they go down.

It's an unhealthy market. These companies should be experts at remote and distributed workforce management, but they are cramming majority of their employees in a tiny area without sufficient reasonably priced housing to put them in. It's costing them a lot of money in cost of living adjustments. It's not a sustainable situation.

That's the thing - I don't think people there can really afford what they are buying. The geography and unwillingness to build up has limited the ability to build the housing needed for population growth, and now it's getting to a breaking point.

They're paying it, presumably.

These companies generally do have remote workforces as well.

I see nothing wrong.

In South Korea when people work for Samsung or LG they live on campus, so they can work 12-16 hour days.

I'm not saying I see nothing wrong with it. I was just commenting that the real estate prices are set by what people will pay. I do not like that situation you describe.

Wow, anyway here's where the much loathed Mini-van is for the win, with the back seats removed an air mattress can be installed, a small solar electrical system with a battery storage for nighttime use could be deployed as well, enough to run a small office-sized fridge and a "32 TV. Cooking could be done on any number of small, compact propane grills on the market. Given the generally mild climate of the region this wouldn't bother me a bit, specially when one considers how much $$ is saved by not paying an outrageous rental fee. Guess it would suck though if you asked someone out on a date and she suggested that they go back to "your place", whoops, that would suck when she found out "your place" was a Mini-van down by the river LOL..

This is not really a new trend in Silicon Valley, it's been like that since I moved out here in the early 80's.

The facility apparently has showers and bathrooms in a gym area, not very convenient but you can't expect everything in this type of situation. As for just urinating any half-gallon sized container (with a wide-mouth opening) would do just fine, dump it on the grass, the lawn will be all the greener for it.

It is fertilizer. But if you add too much of one element to a fertilized lawn, you can actually "burn" the grass. (if its like dogs, you have to hose down an area afterwards to dilute it)

I'm not familiar with housing and rent costs in the area, but they say they can't afford anything nearby... how close is "nearby"? Can they afford something 30 minutes away? An hour? How about splitting rent with roommates?

I rented a 800sqft 1 bedroom in south San Jose for under $1800 a few years ago. Probably 45 minutes to Mt. View.
