Google fiber has just announced their plans for Kansas City, the first city in the nation that will be able to get the service. Here are the available plans:

Gigabit + TV, $120 / month + $300 construction fee.
•1 Gbps internet download and upload.
•Full TV channel line-up.
•Nexus 7 included as your TV remote.
•An HD-ready TV box.
•A gigabit router with 4 ethernet ports.
•A 2TB home media server to record TV on, or access as normal storage.
•A 1TB Google Drive plan.
•$300 construction fee waived with 2-year contract.

Gigabit Internet, $70 / month + $300 construction fee.
•1 Gbps internet download and upload.
•A gigabit router with 4 ethernet ports.
•A 1TB Google Drive plan.
•$300 construction fee waived with 1-year contract.

Free Internet, $0 / month + $300 construction fee.
•5 Mbps internet download and 1 Mbps upload.
•A gigabit router with 4 ethernet ports.
•Construction fee can be mortgaged as $25 / month over 12 months.
•Free service is guaranteed for "at-least" seven years after installation date.
For those interested: A 1TB Google Drive plan, by itself, costs $50 / month.

As Google is primarily a data mining & advertising company, does anyone if Google

1) logs yours internet traffic beyond any legal requirements for data mining purposes?
2) forces you to use their DNS servers?

Sounds like a good deal assuming one can somehow weave their way through the Google privacy minefield.

This actually does sound pretty awesome, but I think this is equivalent to giving a nice salty peanut to a squirrel after you dipped it in poison. With google having 100% control of the actual internet for those customers, they'll probably be packet sniffing everything and tracking everything even more than they do for the rest of the public. Then again, the government is already doing that, so guess it's not a HUGE deal. But people have to realize these high speeds are just to lure people in so they can be tracked further.

I would love to see any kind of fiber come here, but it's never going to happen.

Obviously they would not admit to doing that and would not mention it. I'm sure it's deep within some fine print somewhere on a document not easily available. Just saying, people have to be aware that while this may be great and all, their ultimate purpose is most likely further tracking.

Don't get me wrong, if it was available I'd probably still consider it.
