This actually does sound pretty awesome, but I think this is equivalent to giving a nice salty peanut to a squirrel after you dipped it in poison. With google having 100% control of the actual internet for those customers, they'll probably be packet sniffing everything and tracking everything even more than they do for the rest of the public. Then again, the government is already doing that, so guess it's not a HUGE deal. But people have to realize these high speeds are just to lure people in so they can be tracked further.

I would love to see any kind of fiber come here, but it's never going to happen.

For those speeds at that price they could install cameras throughout my house for all I care.

I give 24 hours before ComCast, AT&T, Cox, or some other cable or DSL company files a suit against Google. Heaven forbid they have competition.

Yup. They did it with a city in NC for starting their own ISP.

If Google is intercepting and decrypting SSL packets, I wonder if this violates EULA for sites where you have to agree not to share your login information with 3rd parties.

Amazing, they even offer FREE 5MBps internet.

Yes, I believe one of Google's goals with this project was to use fast speeds, no data caps, and free minimum connections to show that the major ISPs complaints about bandwidth were bullshit.

i was at the announcement today, it was really cool. The technology got lots of applause but what drew the loudest applause was their willingness to give 5mb service (with a $300 install fee) away for free and that they will be hooking up public services (fire stations, librarys, schools...) for free as well. i am for sure going to be soliciting my neighbors to pre register so we can get it asap. even if i am missing a couple things like espn and amc, the rest far outweighs me being only able to get time warner right now.

across the parking lot they had a whole 'google fiber experience' set up with people demoing living room and conference room like scenarios and you could try it out. toughly impressed. my friend is the community manager for google in kansas city and has been pretty tight lipped for the last couple weeks but much congratulations to her are deserved

"Up to one gigabit upload & download speed" can they really get speeds like that? The way Verizon does it is fiber to the box in my house then from the box run 100 mgs cable to my 4 port modem. Then split it off to my PC and wireless devices. The fastest speed I ever seen was a steam down load at 5.7 megs

I know they do have 1000 meg network cards but I like to see a working model in someone's house before I believe.

A local provider is running fiber to everyones home in my area, and they're handing it off to me in ethernet, I can get 1GBPS down/up for 120$ a month, granted no TV ... I am still PUMPED.

what we need now is for apple to start laying down fiber, hilarity would surely ensue.

"my internet is more artistic"
"yeah well I can put a custom rom on MY internet"
and so on.

Yeah $70/$120 per month is probably more than I would like to spend on internet. It's super fast but I don't need it. The FREE package on the other hand. Arghhhh I want.

It's all about the upstream provider. The fiber media itself can support close to, if more than 1TB/sec, but it's all about the equipment at both ends, as well as the actual upstream feed. The cable company here is providing 100mbps over coax but they have less bandwidth than the phone company so at times my 8mbps service is faster than their 100mbps service not to mention coax is shared and splitted and splitted again and again throughout the city.

I'd also be curious to know if fiber is dedicated in the same way as phone lines. That could have potential for some serious bandwidth if you decide you want an OC48 at home or something.

Of course they are, ISP's all have collaborated with each other to keep prices high, lobby to keep out new ones from forming. Just look at what happened to that city that tried to start its own ISP. Fresh competition is definitely something we need because the current ISP's are the reason why we're so low on the list of speed for the price of our Internet speeds compared to other countries in the world.

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but even with those speeds are you not limited to how fast the server on the other end is? If 99% of the world does not have anywhere near those speeds (specifically upload), then would your download speed be limited by that?

Yes that's true but that means you'll be maxing out everything. Netflix streams insanely fast, backup uploads insanely fast, pr0n insanely fast. It'll probably make you fap faster too.

That would be my concern as well.
Do you really think google is more evil than verizon or comcast?

Not saying google is perfect, but I don't see how they could be worse than the status quo.
Verizon's business plan: Upsell you on other services and price their products such that they maintain a high profit margin.

Google's business plan: Give away stuff for free, track everything you do, and then sell you to an advertising firm.

The telcos are crap because they don't like investing in infrastructure and abuse their natural monopoly in order to maximize their already large profits, but at least they're honest and their interests are generally aligned with your own. Google's interests are directly opposed to your own; you are the product.
