Did they catch up to Touchwiz in terms of multi-window?

LOL, looks like they copied it Except picture in picture is just for Android TV.

Just so people know, there are also dedicated sessions for a lot of the stuff that people might have been looking forward to, but wasn't mentioned (or glossed over) at the keynote.

This includes:
Project Tango
Android Auto
VR
Vulkan
Android N
Google cast and Android TV
and more

So we should be seeing a lot more information coming out, and hopefully some of it is actually interesting.

Android Instant Apps looks awesome.

I am not sure, it looks cool on the surface, but I don't know if it would be all that useful. Why would a developer even want to enable this? They would want you to run their whole app, not just part of it. What is the use case anyway? The example they showed seemed kind of pointless, you could just go to the website to watch the video.

Developers would indeed want users to run their whole app, but if users won't download it, then there isn't much developers can do about it. This gives them a way around this issue.

Well, it seems a large number of people prefer messaging apps that are tied to your phone number, rather than a Google account. Allo is a direct competitor to WhatsApp and Telegram and the like. And I believe they said Allo would use Duo for video chatting, so it's not two completely unrelated messaging apps.

Not sure why they insist on making it double tap. Why not long press like CM has done it?

My first thought when I read that is... LG? double tap to turn off the device and switch a app? Hows that work?

You double tap the recents key, I'm pretty sure LG's double tap has to be done on an empty portion of the screen.

Regarding double tap vs long press, I like Google's approach much better. Double tap is faster than long pressing, so it makes more sense when you're trying to quickly switch to your last app rather than having to press and hold a button.

Android Auto finally will have a phone mode. Looks cool, can't wait to try it.
There was car mode way back in the Android 2.x days. I'm glad to see it's back (even though there are other similar apps on the play store).

I thought the Google OnHub was supposed to be their smart home platform?

It kills me, because there are lots of Google products I like, but I hate relying on their platform because I feel like I can never depend on them. I would pick Echo over any Google Home platform until they guaranteed, in writing, a decent term of support.

No ones excited for Android Auto working stand alone? It's something they promised way back when it was first announced, now it's almost ready from what I've read.

That is pretty exciting.

Allo better be able to accept Gtalk messages or I will be pissed. I have told everyone in my family "if you want me you better be messaging me on Hangouts" only for them to kill it.

Hangouts isn't going away, though.

At least that's what they've said at I/O.

Allo is basically Google's attempt at countering WhatsApp.

And if you're wondering why it's built around your phone number? Remember that many people in developing countries don't have Google accounts and aren't about to use them. This gets them into a service they'd ignore otherwise. Remember, Facebook now lets you sign up for Messenger this way for similar reasons.

Like was said earlier, Hangouts is sticking around. I can't see Allo replacing it unless the new app is so popular that it overshadows the old one.

I dunno, Google is sort of pissing me off, come out with new stuff, pump it for 6 months, then ignore it.

Does the world really need another messaging app? Oops, sorry, does the world really need 2 more messaging apps?

We all know Google's MO. If there is a new Shiny the old one will be neglected and eventually shitcanned after years/months of neglect.

Google talk it more than Hangouts, it is Gmail chat too.

You say that like they are all the exact same messaging apps. Are they?

Google Messenger is an SMS client, that's all it does. Some people just want/need an SMS app, this takes care of that. They don't want a bunch of extra features/bloat that is useless to them, they just want SMS.

Hangouts is based on your Google account. This may be shocking to some but not everyone wants or has a Google Account.

Allo is an app similar to Whatsapp, tied to your phone number. This type of messaging app is always going to be the most popular, so I understand Google going after this market. There are a LOT of Android users in the world, but not all of them have Google accounts. Google wants to reach these users, to get them to use the built in search which can get them to use more Google services.

Duo is the video chat app. Knock Knock is the single best feature I've ever seen with any video chat app, can't wait to use it. I believe in the presentation they said that Allo would use Duo for its video chatting?

Couldn't they add those features to messenger? Do we really need a second messaging app(third if you count aosp messaging)? That way its simply an update to an existing app, which is mostly done automatically, now they're forcing people to download another app.

Call me cynical, but this is another pathetic attempt to to lock down Android more and more for their own agenda.
