So should I pick up a cheap used Nexus 7 or wait till the revamp supposedly coming out in June/July?

The only way I foresee Apple ever catching up to Google in the mapping department is to partner with an already established company or buy them outright, and I don't see either of those scenarios really will ever pan out.

By partner, I mean that the partner gets a lot of money for it instead of the 5% Apple would probably give them.

They could still surprise us and release something in June or July. But I'm suspecting that if they didn't announce the hardware this week, then it may be longer before we see a new Nexus 7.

They could just buy Sygic, not sure which maps they use, but the app itself is way better than Google's navigation imho. Google might have solid mapping, but their app's pretty meh. It's better then Apple's at the moment, but that's not saying anything.

That's true. That's why I'm thinking about waiting till then just because I'm not really in any rush, but I would like something now.

Google's update should make it's free mapping solution a lot better than what it is. Sygic looks pretty awesome. I've never used it, but you have to buy the countries, etc.. So when it comes to that aspect, you can't really go wrong with Google's Nav.

The new Google Maps on desktop is disappointing for the renders. It's a Google Earth render right? Remember all the jokes people made about Apple Maps and how the 3D renders looked totally screwed up in some cases? Well it does in my neighborhood on Google, and the level of detail is far better on Apple Maps.

With that said it's a gimmick feature. The new Google Maps is also slow as hell on my work laptop. But I guess that's the price to pay for new features.

You got an invite? I thought the sign up only started yesterday.

Also I tried that Sygic app and it's a laggy, slow animating port job. The app has its own back button, that right there is just one example of shoddy programming. Plus it defaulted to full screen mode and it took a few minutes to find the right setting to disable that. Not impressed at all.

I signed up after lunch after Google I/O and the invite came through yesterday. My work laptop isn't the fastest although it is an i5, but since its loaded down with AV and corporate crap even switching between Word and Excel is laggy. I've been spoiled by SSDs.

I'm sure Google Maps runs fine on my home computers, but it's kinda annoying to see hardware limitations... lol. I hope all companies move to SSDs soon.

Sygic doesn't look great. I prefer the UI of GMaps or Apple maps. Both look pretty clean and nice.

I got an invite yesterday too, It's pretty smooth on my work laptop (2.6ghz i5) and I haven't tried it at home yet but I'm sure it'd be really smooth there. The 3D mapping thing didn't seem to be working in Chicago either but maybe I was doing something wrong.

I do like the new pins for restaurants and the cards that come up from searches is a lot better than the huge sidebar from before.

Anyone notice that "Keep On Device" downloading is really slow on the new Google Play Music and buggy? Mine crawls even though my speed in everything else is really good (14 Mbps on 4G LTE, WiFi at 18 Mbps or higher). It also seems to disconnect sometimes and the app has crashed twice so far.

I like the new subscription service otherwise, but those issues plus a weird "jumping" album art using the radio feature makes it seem like it's not quite ready for primetime. Feels more like a beta (which isn't that surprising considering Google's history). I like the interface more than Spotify, though Spotify's desktop app is better and Xbox Music/Zune is the best I've used.

Okay so Hangouts is definitely still in beta I'd say. The contact list is really bad. I have no way of knowing whether is someone is currently logged in or away or signed out entirely.

I know they just launched it a few hours ago but I was expecting a better product out the gates. Currently I'd say it's a regression from Google Talk.

i too hate the new Hangouts app. but i believe if the avatar is greyed out, that means the user is not logged in. a step backwards imo, the contact list on gmail has the little status dots so why take it away??

also now i see 9 jilllion contacts on my hangout list. something i din'dt see on gtalk.

The new Fused location api is incredible. Accurate, low power location is such a big deal for developers and mobile in general.

So how many of you guys are going to get the S4 Google Edition? Really thinking of picking up and passing on my N4 to the girlfriend. Not sure if I should get her another N4 though....

This new Google Music thing sucks. I signed up for the trial to test it out and while it does have a good selection of music, the way it buffers and plays is horrible. Mine stutters every 5 seconds even while on a good Verizon 4G connection. When I play tracks from my online Google Music library its perfect.

And color scheme is ugly.
