Here's that Google Maps burn on Apple Maps:

HAHAHAHAHAHA
So should I pick up a cheap used Nexus 7 or wait till the revamp supposedly coming out in June/July?
The only way I foresee Apple ever catching up to Google in the mapping department is to partner with an already established company or buy them outright, and I don't see either of those scenarios really will ever pan out.
By partner, I mean that the partner gets a lot of money for it instead of the 5% Apple would probably give them.
That's true. That's why I'm thinking about waiting till then just because I'm not really in any rush, but I would like something now. They could still surprise us and release something in June or July. But I'm suspecting that if they didn't announce the hardware this week, then it may be longer before we see a new Nexus 7.
They could just buy Sygic, not sure which maps they use, but the app itself is way better than Google's navigation imho. Google might have solid mapping, but their app's pretty meh. It's better then Apple's at the moment, but that's not saying anything.

The new Google Maps on desktop is disappointing for the renders. It's a Google Earth render right? Remember all the jokes people made about Apple Maps and how the 3D renders looked totally screwed up in some cases? Well it does in my neighborhood on Google, and the level of detail is far better on Apple Maps.
With that said it's a gimmick feature. The new Google Maps is also slow as hell on my work laptop. But I guess that's the price to pay for new features.
You got an invite? I thought the sign up only started yesterday.
Also I tried that Sygic app and it's a laggy, slow animating port job. The app has its own back button, that right there is just one example of shoddy programming. Plus it defaulted to full screen mode and it took a few minutes to find the right setting to disable that. Not impressed at all.
I think this article has it right: what Google brought to I/O may be even more significant than a new version of Android. We now have API updates pushing out instantly without a change to the OS at all...
Google Play Services gives control of Android back to Google
Okay so Hangouts is definitely still in beta I'd say. The contact list is really bad. I have no way of knowing whether is someone is currently logged in or away or signed out entirely.
I know they just launched it a few hours ago but I was expecting a better product out the gates. Currently I'd say it's a regression from Google Talk.
