What I really get from this is Google loves them some Qualcomm. The Exynos S4 is now the saddest Galaxy ever released.

Elaborate a little? Is the S4 available from T-mo and AT&T Exynos or Snapdragon? And which one is better? Which does the Google version use?

The AT&T/T-Mobile version plus the Verizon version are all Snapdragon. From a third party development standpoint the Snapdragon one is better as it already has a working CM ROM plus this new Google S4.

A little surprised they didn't announce a new version of the N7, since it was released at I/O last year. This IMO is a good thing, as it will keep me from buying a device I don't need

The hardware side is cool, but I'm really excited about what Android will look like six months from now, if they update the entire OS to follow the card look, I'll be stoked.

Hangouts is neat, but only like three people I know used Talk before, and hardly any of my friends use G+, so they seriously need to integrate Voice and SMS/MMS to make it more useful to me.

I guess I have some time to think about it. Debating with myself if I want to buy a Galaxy S4 Google Edition and sell my Nexus 4.

The micro SD slot, bigger screen, and lack of glass back (yeah, I'm looking forward to a plastic phone after the this stupid LG design fail) has me tempted to upgrade already.

It's even better than a theoretical Nexus 4S with identical stats because the GS4 will have a thousand times the sales.

Best hardware with the best software. Nexus with removable battery and SD card? I feel like I'm dreaming.

So what's with the new hangouts? It just pops up with the regular Google talk.

I had to uninstall Google talk then reinstall the new version (hangouts) from the market. Gtalk wouldn't update to hangouts for me.

It's OK, I'm not seeing anything earth shattering.

New Google music is nice though.

I'm not able to uninstall gTalk as its built into the OS as part of gapps. Hangouts from the Play Store only has an 'Open' option for me, no uninstall button.

Google Play Music All Access is basically the best music service/app ever conceived

Well, now I feel like being inquisitive. What makes it better than others? Which others have you used? Convince people to use it, dguy!

EDIT:

And most of the "Subsidies are bad" threads focus on and blame the iPhone for inflating device prices. The theory is that Apple charged a lot for the iPhone, but because of the subsidy, people only pay $200 and don't realize the true cost. Therefore, it let every other manufacturer raise their price. So, if we eliminated subsidies, phones would have to compete with each other in an open market, lowering the price.

You said that you have "always heard" that Apple gouges carriers on be iPhone, which led me to believe you've read a couple of articles or posts about it but had never really looked or researched it for yourself. Because then you would know that smart device prices have always been in the 600-700 range, so you would have never had made the comment that you did to begin with.

I looked up subsidies earlier today, and most of them were below $450. In fact, quite a few of AT&T's subsidies weren't even $400. Verizon seemed to have higher subsidies than AT&T... especially on the DROID line.

This cannot be correct as you have to use the Google music app to play it. It's an utter POS. If I could use it with PlayerPro it would be slick. But with Google's music app I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.

Just finished watching all of today's I/O keynote.

Larry Page was channeling Carl Sagan for his speech and the Q&A session. Part of that may be the voice paralysis thing causing his voice to sound different, but he also balanced humility versus optimism.

EDIT: The giant Google Earth in the background probably had something to do with that impression as well

But did you try the new Play Music that was updated today? I hated the old Music app, but this is a humongous improvement. It's much better looking and easier to use.

I just did, it looks nicer but it still doesn't normalize audio, I haven't found a music player app on Android that does this. But, I have bought music off the play store and the volume varies from track to track. Sometimes I hardly notice, but other songs will have a night and day difference. I understand Google has nothing to do with how the songs on the store were recorded. But it would be nice if they had a setting where I could select a base volume so each track played at the same level. Google needs to add audio normalization directly into Android. I'm not talking something super high tech or impossible to do here, shit my iPod Nano has this feature.

The Verge has an exclusive on this new "unified messaging services".
http://www.theverge.com/2013/5/15/4318830/inside-hangouts-googles-big-fix-for-its-messaging-mess
I'm interested to see how it unifies things, instead of just force me to get another app and try to convince others to use it..
They're dropping XMPP support, so the answer seems to be pretty clear. It's "unified" in the sense that if they force everyone to use their application, then everyone will be on the same service.

I'll have to go yell at my GTalk contacts to get on AIM or something; requiring another client for IM is absurd.

Still won't install on my Nexus 7.

Has anyone tried chatting with someone who still has just Talk? (Hangouts is 2.3+ btw) The people I tried with got a 'use Hangouts on the web' email. I thought it was backwards compatible?

That's the way I feel. Though I'm still happy with the N7 right now.

No need, just go to the Play Store from a desktop/laptop and install Hangouts that way, it will update Talk on your phone.

you can go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2280184 to get the actual apk files. That's what I did since I was having issues updating as well...
