Oh well. I continued to be gainfully employed at a neat little start-up company.

If you really want to know ask HR, or the person you were in contact with. Be nice and ask what your weakness was compared to the selection.

Many times they will tell you and it might be something you can improve on.

I have a contact at HR there and a couple of friends (NYC office). I've entertained going there a few times over the years but never got the feeling there's much growth. Too many Type A personalities too.

Oh and to the OP. I interview 100s of developers a year. Sometimes it goes great but we don't hire the guy because one of the interviewers had a minor objection or another candidate was just a little more of a fit. Keep trying. If you have an HR contact at Google, ping them again in six months and ask if there are any new spots. The Google HR department seem really proactive at getting talent in, so unless you totally bombed out you probably have another shot somewhere else in the company.

I have a friend that got hired on a few years ago at a start-up company, he was employee #6 (the four founders then the fifth and then him) and got a stake in the company. As soon as they even try to sell the company or anything else he will have a very nice chunk of change. He is very good at what he does.
