Google to offer free email with 1GB storage

I believe this is my first post so bear with me.

Google is set to offer free email with an astonishing 1GB storage! This is what, 250 times the current Yahoo Mail offering of 4MB and 500 times of Hotmail. So far signups has been reserved for invited users only, and we shall all be able to register in the next few weeks.

Wouldn't people just abuse all that space? I wonder how this will turn out.

I'm a bit reluctant to believe this. I mean, the Google Press Release is dated April 1st. I guess we'll all have to wait and see what happens...

Thought about that . . . I'm just wondering how it would reflect on the company if it was just an april fool's. Maybe it's just that I haven't seen any from a fortune 500.

I'm guessing they're using this as a way to take the business from the 2 big companies that are trying to enter the search engine business (Yahoo and MS). How many people actually would use 1gb? There are chances for abuse if people are given that much space, but I guess they're also counting on the fact that most users won't even come close to the 1gb. Or that by the time they do, storage will be cheaper on the web/servers for google.
Then again, could be an April Fool's joke.

Also, would you really use it if it's from Google, if.....................there is a user agreement that says the email content belongs to Google and it's available for public searches? that'd be a great way to make Google search even more useful.

Yeah, I read about this on Slashdot and CNet. It could be an April Fools... at the same time, whether they offer 100mb or 1gb, after a certain space allocation it really wouldn't matter. For them to even go over a few hundred mb's they could just have gone ahead and offered 10gb's. No one would even approach it, but it's a nice number for them to advertise.

April Fools Maybe?

As an Email Admin, I have to say that a 1GB mail account is plain stupid. Maybe if it's a web-based account only, it would work. But if you were trying to load the headers using IMAP, your client would probably seem so slow when you click on a folder that it wouldn't work. That is, only if you actually use most of your space.

I don't know why anyone would ever offer something like that since it won't scale very well. Think about how many Terabytes of data they'll have to be able to support overnight. We're talking about $60,000-80,000 for each 1TB SAN which only supports 1000 users. So we're talking a $60-80 committment for them per user and that's not even counting server, support, or licensing costs which usually cost more than the disks. This is either fake, or it will be short lived when the admins over there sober up.
