The google voice twitter account yesterday said they were starting to send out invites to people who signed up on the reserve list. They said to be patient because they had a really long list and it was going to take a while to get through it.

Basically, it is a single phone number that you could tie to multiple phones (cell phone, home phone, work phone, etc). You can set it up so that calls go to certain phones at different times of the day or so that calls from certain people only go to certain phones (ie only calls from your friends go to your cell phone).

This probably does a better job of explaining it.

I was thinking about getting this for my wife's business but the GoogleVoice number is a brand new number and we already have her business number on all of her advertising.

The google voice page obviously explains it best, but essentially it's the last phone number you'll ever need. You can have google voice tie in to your cell, work, and home numbers so when someone calls your GV number, all your phones will ring. Or just your cell. Or just your home number.

You can set up rules so work calls never ring your home number, or friends never ring your work number. It'll do transcriptions of voicemails. You can also set up rules based on individual numbers so you can block a number using a web interface. You can also put the call through to voicemail and listen to the message as it is left, similar to a desktop answering machine, and then pick up if it's someone you want to talk to.

I had an account with grandcentral and was converted into a google voice account
at this point there is nothing on my dashboard that allows me to give out invites so i'm guessing the only way you are going to get one is to sign up on the google page and they parse them out.

Finally got an invite, and effin verizon won't put the verification call through...

I just got my invite.

The verification call takes a while. As in, I had to cancel, and I got the call like 10 mins later. It was to my Sprint cell. I don't think the issue is on your carrier's side, probably Google's outbound dialer getting slammed.

I can't decide what number to pick as we might be moving shortly to a different area code and I really like my ooma number.

Should I get a # in my current area code (same as my Ooma)?
Or get a number in the other area code we might move to? (Actually, there are two depending on where we go - 727 or 813)

The only negative aspect of Google Voice is the lack of integration with Google Apps.

Oh, and there's no excuse for the major telecoms not offering a service like this years ago.

oo.. I'll take an invite if anyone is willing. I signed up when it was grand central waiting for them to open back up, but google bought them, and I signed up shortly after they had a sign up. no dice still =(
