Can I stop text messages from being forwarded to my iPhone and only pick them up on GV?

MotionMan

You can choose what number to forward to (or disable forwarding for SMS) in settings.

Cool - found it.

Is there any way to forward texts to e-mail instead?

MotionMan

So I disabled the forwarding of SMS, but it is still doing it. Am I missing another setting?

MotionMan

Go to Settings -> Phones. Find your cell phone, click Edit. You'll see an option for sending SMS to that phone. Uncheck and click Save. Fina!

Awesomeness. Thanks.

Is there any way to forward texts to e-mail instead?

MotionMan

Don't think you can. I suggested it to them though!

I'm having trouble understanding the purpose of using gizmo to forward to a skype account? Can someone explain the advantages of doing this?

So you call your Google Voice # and it forwards it to your Gizmo 5# then it fowards it to your skype?

That would be killer for me. I do not have a text plan.

I think it would be cool if you could respond back and have it send them a text message as a reply.

If you have web access on your phone, you could use google voice mobile to check for messages.

Agreed. Since I have an iPhone, getting an e-mail to notify me of a text would be great. Otherwise, it is just hit and miss.

It would really tell Apple/ATT FU. You wouldn't have to pay extra for SMS messages which should have been included in the price.

Google is giving out free Google Voice cards. Get em while there hot & while supplies last.

Simply log into Google Voice and if you see an offer on the lower left of Google Voice click it and get em. Try logging in a few times as the offer pops up sometimes. So make sure to click it when you see it.

My free cards showed up a few days ago. They're pretty nice, no "advertising" or whatever on them.

My landline is barebones, no long-distance carrier. I can "dial" a number on the computer and forward it to my landline - presto, free long distance.

I was just playing with this. It works pretty well.

You don't need to install the Gizmo5 software. Just make a Gizmo account and log into http://my.gizmo5.com

Then use Google Voice to make calls.

Pretty cool.

Same here & Google Voices name & number announce feature is nice, since paying an extra $2.50 a month for caller ID on a landline is lame.

Yeah saving everyone's contact # in GVoice is nice. I use Gmail so having it all in one address book is really handy.

sorry to bump this thread, but i'm confused. is there any fee for using gismo5 with google voice? on gizmovoice, it says it's 2 cents a minute. but i dont understand why that is. i thought all calls made with google voice were free. is gizmo charging 2 cents a minute? and why?

is there any other means by which i can call from a PC to a phone, or answer calls with a PC? (all for free..)

If you make a call with Gvoice and have it ring Gizmo, it's free. If you use Gizmos Google dialer thing to dial #s from Gizmo it costs.

So using Google Voice to call Gizmo is free, but using Gizmo to make the call is not.

An example....

So if you got a wifi phone or Ethernet phone, something like that.....You would have to log into Google Voice & dial the number then have it ring Gizmo which would then ring the Wifi Phone.

Or pay to be able to dial on the Wifi phone.

Gizmo is the 3rd party method. Who knows what Google plans? If Skype has "Skype" phones then it wouldn't surprise me if Google does in the future.

Good thread. Lots of helpful information.

I need an invite if anyone has one.

Gvoice isn't on the invite to the masses phase yet. :C

The GV number you get when texting someone seems to be a permanent map for people in your GV contact list. So you can go ahead and program that in to their contact info on your phone.

I'm not going start an actual transition for a while though...all depends on how well the service does.

Thanks! I thought to call from GV w/out the GV app, I would have to annoyingly launch Safari, go to GV, then type in the number. I tried your tip and it works well.

Bump.

Looking for new tips and tricks.

MotionMan

I exclusively use GV for Craigslist. I encourage people to text me offers to my GV number then when I reply to their text it goes back through GV. Perfect to stay anonymous.
