Are we talking headphone/mic here, or can you do like skype where you can buy a usb adapter and use a regular phone to call out with grandcentral/google voice?

if you have iphone or g1, you can use the app to dial out.
or using landline, you can call your number and push some buttons to dial one of your contacts. (since i have g1, i haven't used that feature)

This looks pretty dang cool.

Free calling in the US and free call forwarding and a free number....So you can use this on your pc or on your landline or mobile.

Also the ton of other features.......The only paid feature is for making international calls.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cag48VWnaKI
Not bad......Not bad at all....

I remember back in the day with free calls with like Dial-Pad and such....Now we have some crappy adcalls.com program......

So this will be cool.

Poor Skype though....At least they offer the best webcam chat.

Man not to long ago we got broadband video on demand, with Netflix and Hulu leading. Which is making cable and satellite companies crap themselves.

Now comes along Google Voice for phone and cell companies....

I wonder if the rumors of the Google phone will surface? There is rumors of Google buying some wireless spectrum? Maybe to be used for a phone service for a Google Phone? Course the Google Phone turned out to be an OS for cell phones. The wireless air waves they bought could be for there wifi idea too. I dunno. Maybe well see a free alternative to the cell phone soon? Hrmmm... Here is an old story on it: http://tech.blorge.com/Structu...ee-cell-phone-service/

I mean maybe after Google Voice is launched, they may plan to launch free phones that work with it or low cost phones that work with the service.....Who knows....

Does anyone have an invite they wouldn't mind sharing, or has that not opened up yet?

Can you text to your GrandCentral account and have it show up on your cell? I might try it later when I get some time.

Pretty informative. Talks about Telecoms and how they have allot to worry about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LenCwPVv8ZM

Also VOIP services like Skype need to start worrying too.

What's interesting is there has been free voice mail and such, but now Google is gonna bring it all together. Anyone remember when AOL offered a free voice mail number?

Is there alternatives to what Google is offering?

For unblocking any number called to your phone/cell. http://www.trapcall.com/

As for Phone spam you can use http://www.donotcall.gov

Voicemail: http://www.youmail.com/home/corp/learnMore.do

Know of any other alternatives?

As a long time Grand Central user, this is a welcome change.

However, I really wish Google would change the current Google Account/Google Apps integration. I use Google Apps for my email and calendar, and not being able to integrate them with my Google account is big loss.

I signed up for the invite weeks ago. It'll be public before they get around to it I am sure.

Hell yeah, I don't even listen to voicemail anymore (unless some Indian employment recruiter calls and transcription mangles the translation - which incidentally is pretty damn funny).

Now if only they would allow me to get a new number local to where I live (I know that's not the point of it, but I never plan on living in NY again).

Me first. I might end up paying for one on ebay, but I bet 10 seconds later Google opens up Voice to everyone

Also Picasa was advertising an auto add red eye to photo feature, lol.

You can try the Way Back Machine to see if you missed it: http://www.archive.org/web/web.php

When are we suppose to get Gvoice or Google Voice? I heard a few weeks....Guess they ran into some bugs or something....

Don't tell me I have to wait for this like I'm waiting for Duke Nukem Forever and Evil Dead IV and Phantasm 5......*sarcasm*

Has Google affected your life in a positive way or a negative way?

Does Google spam you with the data they collect for advertising to make money?

Google makes good products. People choose to use there services, there not forcing it down your throat. If Google scares you, then don't use anything by them, because other companies don't do similar things, uh they do.

So if Google is taking over the world, it's because you, the people who use all there services want them too, because you love there products. You made Google what it is today.

They use adbots to scan and collect key words and such to sell to advertising. I don't feel as if my personal data has been leaked. I don't get spam asking about what product I can get for something I wrote in a Gmail.

Again other companies use similar tactics.

Why is it that if a company makes great products and becomes big, then it's considered evil or bad or uncool?

Damn you Google for making my life easier! Damn you for making things more convenient! Damn you for giving me so much for free!

Well take this with a grain of salt....

Google Voice is being released in a few weeks for public beta. http://online.wsj.com/video/wo...B8A7-90D8CAD97FB7.html

My take? When there ready, you'll know it. They are working out kinks and trying to improve the voice to text transcribing and such.

What features do you hope they will add to the service?

I'd say:

To be able to transfer your current number to your Google Voice #.

To make and receive calls from your pc. Like with Google Talk and in Gmail.

To be able to use it with wifi / voip phones, so you don't need a landline. Do they make wifi adapters or Ethernet ones that convert landline phones? What kind of wifi phones are out there? Do they make usb cordless phones? Course would rather go through the router and not the pc.

They said free calling in the US? What about Canada?

What features would you like to see?

Yes. When you add a phone for forwarding, you can check off whether you want to receive SMS messages at that phone (if it's a mobile phone)
