Why does it exist? I can't understand why Google would try to enter the social networking world when Facebook (like it or not) and Twitter pretty much has the market cornered?

Google recognizes that social is becoming more important and that, frankly, they suck at it and it's becoming a huge blindspot in their search profile. They tried to solve that by buying Twitter, who rebuffed them, so instead they designed G+ from the ground up, tied bonuses to its success, and built themselves a Twitter competitor.

Considering they've got themselves 20 million users and some pretty high marks for the service, I'd say they're doing something right.

I know, why bother competing. New startups should just DIAF and roll over to the big guys. I mean Ford cornered the market way back when. Good thing all those other automobile companies decided not to even try.

Well considering IE sucks balls and Firefox has had it's share of issues, the market in the browser world was open for a new competitor, but I get what you're saying. I guess I'm not very impressed with Google+ at this point.

Google's strategy behind Chrome was not primarily to become the #1 browser, but rather to pick up the pace of development on existing browsers. They wanted new javascript engines, better page rendering, etc so that they could deliver better content to users. Becoming competitive was just a side-effect of that push.

Facebook dominates social networking.

A lot of people don't like a lot of things about Facebook.

Because there's still very clear room for improvement in the market. Twitter can be a complete mess, and Facebook is even worse.

Google+ actually could have really differentiated itself on security alone, but Google's track record there isn't great (Android tracking shit), and they've made some questionable calls with it too (deleting accounts that don't use real names).

Right now there's none that are really quite great. Ideally I'd want it to be simple but aesthetically pleasing (allow some customization like color schemes and possibly fonts but keep it limited to ones that aren't stupid; keep most of the junk where its not forced, but make it easy to access that stuff as well). Then I'd say integrate something like Skype and have a messaging system that isn't mind-bogglingly bad (Facebook e-mail and chat are both awful). Give the user complete control over privacy and/or the ability to manage multiple accounts more simply (i.e. allow you to have a public alias setup, but then you can keep your personal one for family or friends better).

A lot of people don't like a lot of things about Facebook.

Privacy and parental controls are one of my big issues with facebook.

I would like to see something where parents have control over their kids accounts. Where parents can lockdown the account, and have the ability to approve password changes.

But facebook in its current status allows kids to create a second account, then block their parents from seeing the account.

Part of my job as a responsible parent is knowing what my kids do online, but places like facebook make that responsibility difficult.

Everything needs competition, especially companies/products that seemingly have a monopoly on a market

That and to setup their idea of future OSes. Google is really pushing to make things web-based, and Chrome is a big part of that. Chrome helps as it allows people to get used to it so its not like going from Windows to a smartphone OS, as they're already used to Chrome.

Twitter's useful, but I don't see it as a major money maker. It's like a news feed for dummies. It's good for businesses, and organizations to send out time sensitive information to many people at once.

competition is always good! Before FIOS came out, I was getting 7-8 Mbps thru Comcast. Now that Comcast has a competitor in this neighborhood, I'm getting 20-25 Mbps from Comcast for the same price!

no question they had more resources at their disposal but at the end of teh day the only thing that matters is users.
