Yea but facebook/myspace started from nothing. Google had a LITTLE advantage over them.

That didn't stop Buzz from being a piece of crap that nobody used.

Google has a lot going for it, but the product they delivery ultimately matters most and Google+ seems to be headed in the right direction. I have no idea whether it will become the next Twitter, supplant Facebook, or settle in as a 3rd competitor, but it's hard to deny that Google has been off to a great start with the service.

Me and all my friends have google+ accounts now, we all had it in the first week itself I guess. Its funny how no one actually posts anything there... I probably have ~ 50 friends NO ONE posts anything. If fact it almost seems like people have cut down on Facebook posts too, I see fewer updates. G+ might have just confused people or might have just made us realize how stupid these whole "social network" thing is...

regarding the op, if you were capable of understanding the answer (and there have been lots of good replies), you would never have asked the question so I'm not really sure I can say anything to help.

Buzz proves my point, would you have ever heard of it if it were not from google.

There are plenty of other Myspace/facebook/etc... type sites that most will never know of. Buzz was known as it was from google.

Heh, same here. I think people all rushed out to get a G+ account so they wouldn't be left behind, and then when they got in, they realized no one was saying anything, so they shrugged their shoulders and went back to facebook or went back to not really using a social network.

True, but Buzz also disproves your point. It doesn't matter what traction Google brings to a product if it sucks. Buzz never took off like G+ has and that's because G+ is a decent product and Buzz was half-baked crap.

I've noticed that G+ has lots of my friends who refused to join Facebook. They're pretty active on it, but my Facebook friends, not so much.

I already said this before games is what keep people on facebook. Google+ does not have any games so there is nothing to keep people there. The very thing you guys hate about facebook is what keeps facebook alive. All that spam from those games makes it seem like something is going on and has a vibrant feel to the page. Once that is removed it kills all the traffic that is being generated and makes it feel like a dead page.

It's summer, less people sitting inside on computers. Although I do think in the longer term we will see social networking lose steam. Over the last 2 years it got really huge with facebook, but now that people have done it for a while, many will stop logging in.

I think social networking will still remain popular amongst the 30 and under crowd, and fairly popular for 30-40, but beyond that I think it will decrease. Many people I know in their 40's or older created accounts so they could see what their classmates looked like and were up to, and now that they know the novelty of it has faded and they don't log in anymore. There is only so much useless posting you can do on the site before you get bored.

I ask myself that same question. Google keeps rolling out services that I have no urge to try. All my needs are satisfied. Seems like they're pissing in the wind.
Why would I want to kiss my friends goodbye and set up on Google+? I hear it's a pretty lonely ghost town. Which is probably exactly why Google threw out the number of visitors -- to make it sound like a smashing success and thus encourage people to give them a shot.

Also there's no way I'm comfortable giving ONE company all my email, photos, comments, likes, search queries, etc. I really doubt Google execs are virtuous enough to trust.

Google recognizes that social is becoming more important and that, frankly, they suck at it and it's becoming a huge blindspot in their search profile. They tried to solve that by buying Twitter, who rebuffed them, so instead they designed G+ from the ground up, tied bonuses to its success, and built themselves a Twitter competitor.

Considering they've got themselves 20 million users and some pretty high marks for the service, I'd say they're doing something right.

That stat was 20 mil visitors, not users. At least that was the wording of the WSJ a couple weeks ago. Are they really claiming that many users?

As I said above, Google is keenly aware of the fact that closed social networks are a blind spot for them. Based on their ~2005 bet on MySpace over Facebook and the continuing-to-decline relationship between FB and Google, they don't have much hope for a partnership.

Social networking makes sense for Google, considering they have almost 100 million email users and many millions more in daily search users. Why not try to get those people to stick around longer? Plus, Google+ isn't a Facebook killer, it's most certainly more aimed at Twitter which, again, makes tons of sense for Google. Instead of creating expensive (and precarious) partnerships with Twitter for their data, why not just take all their users?

Why would I want to kiss my friends goodbye and set up on Google+? I hear it's a pretty lonely ghost town. Which is probably exactly why Google threw out the number of visitors -- to make it sound like a smashing success and thus encourage people to give them a shot.

Google Plus is more of a distribution platform (ala Twitter) than a true one-to-one social network. G+ is currently sharing billions of items, but that sharing has been much more of the broadcast type. All that aside, there are plenty of people who are happy to have some sort of alternative to Facebook.

Also there's no way I'm comfortable giving ONE company all my email, photos, comments, likes, search queries, etc. I really doubt Google execs are virtuous enough to trust.

People have turned their lives over to Facebook despite all their privacy gaffs, no reason to think they'll be hesitant to do so with Google.

10 million users 20 days ago. I really doubt their pace has slowed down so much they haven't hit 20 million users yet.

18 million users 10 days ago.

I can't imagine the creators of Facebook using a lot of venture capital as Google did when it first started.

I finally got it, but it's got millions of years to go before it is remotely like FB in success. Perhaps it will replace Twitter, which I never use. I have about ~550 FB contacts, and only 30ish G+, and nobody says anything on there.

Well considering IE sucks balls and Firefox has had it's share of issues, the market in the browser world was open for a new competitor, but I get what you're saying. I guess I'm not very impressed with Google+ at this point.

Just recently saw an article on one of the major news networks that said people who use IE6 (they mentioned 6 specifically) tend to have lower IQ's than people who use other browsers.
Here's the link to that story if it hasn't been posted already: http://technolog.msnbc.msn.com/_new...rnet-explorer-6-users-have-low-iqs-study-says
