I have no idea of the quality of this thing. The description they give is:

Retail
36-bit true color!
PC and Mac (with USB connection)
USB bus powered, no AC power adapter and cord needed.
68.7 billion colors, 12-bit Grays, 1-bit line art
Optical Resolution 600 x 1200 dpi
Advanced flatbed CIS scanning technology.
Auto-display image memory size.
Small footprint, compact design.
Batch Scan: select and scan different areas of the same image and save
Scan to Email, fax printer, file and click board.
Easy to install, easy to use
Free Software Bundle!

I am sure it's not the best performing scanner out there but it might make a great spare, unit for the kids or gift.

Find it
here.

Artec brand; I've got a 1236 USB. It's a scanner - it does the job. Nothing bad to say about it really. The Googlegear one is Ultima 2000 though.

I've got the 2000, and like all cheap scanners the TWAIN software is crappy - the same one as for the 1236 (which I think is the same scanner with maybe minor changes as they use the same drivers too).

It works under 98SE and XP Pro fine, it's host powered which is nice, and works on USB 1.1 and 2.0 I've tried it on (only 1.1 speed obviously).

The quality is fine, good resolution, not great colours, not incredibly fast.

Certainly worth $10, I think I paid $20 from www.compgeeks.com for it a while back.

I've been debating buying a few (if the promotion allows purchasing more than one - I haven't even bothered to check) and sell them off to make a small profit. Guess that would depend on how much the shipping is.

Staples is selling the Artec/Atronix e+48U scanner that it used to have for $15 AR for $19.90 with no rebate (clearance). It's also USB powered and has 48 bit color, etc. It has gotten mixed reviews but people seem to feel it's good enough for rebate scans and the like.

http://www.staples.com/Catalog/Browse/Sku.asp?PageType=1&Sku=499449

On threads here and FW it has gotten mixed reviews, but it seems to be OK for rebates, etc. And it is easily portable, etc.
Here's one such thread:
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=40&threadid=809796&FTVAR_MSGDBTABLE=arc

And here's the last comment of that thread, from "TheDon" (note: back then he paid $10, not the current $19.90 price):

I received mine today. Good find Captain Rebate. I have a basement full of scanners, this one's a keeper. I have tried to keep quiet when I see all of the negative posts from people who crap all over an item just because it can be had at a low price. It just kills me when all of the "experts" give their opinion on a product they have no experience with. I see it all the time on this board. Unless you personally have a chance to review a product, you don?t know its potential. The is a nice scanner and a superb value. Its virtually silent in operation, true 48 bit, buss powered, and the TWAIN driver is excellent. Yes there are better scanners, but for less than $10 shipped, you can?t go wrong.

I have the e+48u and wouldnt recommend it. The drivers have issues both with windows 98 and me and the scanner software always dies in the middle of a scan. Plus, the gear that runs the thing broke just today. Kinda disappointing. Images scanned by it were ok quality, not bad for $15 if you can get it to work properly.

So what is the best bank for the bunk scanner right now? Any of the real small thin ones? Any wireless ones? Or USB2?

IMHO - I've seen better deals at my local CompUSA, and I don't need to pay for shipping. Hard to believe that shipping costs more than the item...
