"Tax reform" is Republicanese for cutting taxes on the wealthy. Cuz they're the ones who are really hurting. It would be immoral not to heed their piteous cries.

I find this post accurate.

Lol...Trump currently railing against filibuster rules and stating that we need to move to a majority rule in the Senate. Does he genuinely not realize that the bill that failed last night only needed a majority and that the didn't get that?

It's possible McCain and the GOP caucus know McCain won't be running again and therefore doesn't have to worry about a target on his back for his vote. The bill had to die, they needed someone to fall on the grenade, and the guy with brain cancer was probably the best choice.

Great optics, though, I think I even saw a tear begin to form in the corner of the McConnell's eye last night after the bill failed.

Let us not forget rest of the picture and take a moment to pay our utmost contempt to The Koch brothers who have spent tens of millions over the last decade trying to buy legislators for the primary purpose of defeating Obamacare. At least for the moment, by the thinnest razor edge of margins, our democracy is not "yet" totally for sale.

"yet" is the operative word.

They failed by only one, unexpected vote. This will merely persuade them that they still have to buy a couple more Senators for the next round.

If Congress wants a prayer of getting onto tax reform/cuts they've got to start now. Another repeal attempt can't be squeezed into this year with many trivial things like passing a budget, raising the debt ceiling, reauthorizing the FAA, etc looming real large in the window. Also they may have to override a presidential veto in the very near future. They're out of runway and there isn't a chance in hell they strip healthcare from millions in a midterm year that historically places the party in power at a major disadvantage with this millstone of a president around their necks.

I'm guessing someone told him that the repeal blowing up last night would make taxes way harder and require 60 votes to do the big things they want to do. He wants them to change the rule so that they can push through tax cuts for the wealthy.

Praising McCain for his no vote last night is the same as praising a firefighter putting out the fire he started. McCain's YES on the MTP was the legislative equivalent of arson. Fuck him. Still.

Let us not forget the 49 who voted yes for skinny repeal. 20% premium increases, allowing big companies to stop offering health insurance for 8 years?' WTF? Can you imagine going to your job to open an email telling you that as of Jan 1st your company will no longer be offering health insurance & you won't be seeing any sort of raise to offset your costs?

GOP can get Dems on board if they cap the tax cuts @250K

If pigs had wings, they'd fly.

Repubs are held hostage by consortiums of far right mega rich donors. Not only do they pay for everything they also enforce compliance with the Teahad.

Reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Mr. Burns is trying to get rid of the dental insurance at the plant in exchange for one keg of beer, except x100 times more ridiculous.

I just saw a local AZ poll where the ACHA/BCHA was polling at 6%. SIX Percent.

I don't think too many people in AZ are going to be real pissed at McCain. Flake who voted yes however and is by no means a lock for re-election next year really will have to watch his back.

I saw where (this morning at least) this whole deal was a small headline on Fox, and it read something like "Obamacare fix failure".

The effort will now redouble to keep sabotaging the ACA and spin it so the Democrats take the blame. Hell Trump is saying to do exactly that. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the end goal all along. GOP Congress doesn't actually want to pass anything, they just want to *look* like they are trying to get rid of the ACA.

Yes, assuming this bill is truly dead I expect Trump to double down on the sabotage. A normal person would now try to make it work because that would be best for his constituents. As we all know though, Trump is abnormal.

Current mood in the House:

Speaker Paul Ryan was not his typical Eagle Scout optimistic self.

At a closed-door conference meeting with House Republicans hours after Sen. John McCain scuttled perhaps the last best hope of repealing Obamacare, Ryan read an excerpt from “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” a song about sailors drowning in a 1975 shipwreck. He likened the tune to what he deemed the Senate’s tragic failure to repeal Obamacare

Bleary eyed &'hurting today but it was worth the all nighter!
I had surgery on my knee yesterday, and the hydrocodone had me buzzed, so I watched the whole thing. It was beautiful looking at conservative Sen. McChinless's tears.

They seem very sad that they were unable to strip health insurance from tens of millions of poor people. Poor guys, maybe they can feel better by cutting funding for school lunches or disabled children or something.

That is, after all, Paul Ryan's lifelong ambition.

This just means Trump for sure has 3.5 years minimum left to F this country up. If people don't pay for their bad decisions, they don't learn. This bill would've hurt Trump states far far worse than liberal coastal elite states. Yet, we are cheering that it failed.... why? This bill was the key to taking the senate in 2018 and because it failed, there will be nothing concrete (i.e. no dead bodies) to point to and no big losses from conservatives will be sustained in midterms.

I am very disappointed that this failed. This is a big blow to the left, and a huge win for Trump.

Because the only point of winning elections is to enact policy and this is a huge policy win for Democrats.

Pretty simple.

The reason "conservatives" continually kick our asses in almost every different type of election in the US despite lower popular representation and less education is because we continually bend over to save "conservatives" from their own idiotic decisions. As I said before: People who don't pay for their bad decisions do not learn. If you want to actually win and do something good for the country you will have to sometimes allow unsavory things to happen to unsavory people.

I for one am happy that millions of people won't be losing insurance and premiums won't go up 20% extra on other individuals. These are real people's lives we are talking about.
