Cost.

We can use aluminum in car frames and other parts. Lighter so you get better gas milage and performance. Then the body could be fiberglass (ala corvette) or carbon fiber, again lighter. Yet we still use steel.

Just because something is better (think Beta vs VHS) does not mean its the best item for the overall job.
And from what little I have read it seems most items this is geared toward are very small.

Corvettes have not used fiberglass since 1982. The bodies have been made of Sheet molded compound (SMC) because it is more consistent, cheaper, and lighter than fiberglass.

SMC still uses fiberglass.

SMC is both a process and reinforced composite material. This is manufactured by dispersing long strands (>1”) of chopped glass fibers on a bath of polyester resin.

That's glass fiber, not fiberglass that you referred to. There is a huge difference between fiberglass and SMC. You know what I mean, just admit you're wrong.

If manufacturers make it so you can't break your TV, they wont be able to sell as many TVs.

For anyone else - you can buy glasses made of glass that if you drop them on the floor, they bounce, not break. I've been considering buying a set, as I've grown tired of throwing out all of my glasses every few years and replacing them with a new set once a few of them have broken. (I prefer my glasses match each other.)

Just buy twice as many glasses and store the extras in your basement. If you currently throw away your glasses once half of them break, buying twice as many would make your glasses last three times as long.

That's essentially what I do with my socks - I buy 50-60 pairs at a time and wear them until they all start to wear out, then I replace them all at once. If I only bought new socks as the old ones wore out I'd end up with socks of varying ages and whiteness. If they're all the same age I can just throw all of them in the drawer unmatched and grab any two.

Gorilla Glass is used in the new Dell Streak (an android based smartphone)... there were youtube clips of people with cracked screens just by dropping it a few feet off the ground though so i don't know how strong it really is.

Gorilla glass is NOT unbreakable. Hard to break, scratch and dent does not mean none of those things will happen.

like the iphone, droid, droid x and other phones that use it. It merely helps to prevent scratches from keys and other every day stuff and minor bumps.

the stupidity of people of some people who think that dropping their phone 4 feet onto cement and not have it break is amazing.

The Motorola Droid has Gorilla Glass. That's how I found out about the glass.
And so far, this type of screen, and the construction of the Droid's body, has been awesome. I don't use a case of screen protector, and since purchase of the Droid on Day 1, the screen has remained perfect. I have a few marks on the corners of the body and a few chips in the paint around the display border, but that's it.

they failed with the name, it sounds retarded as hell. Even more lame than Apple's Retina display.

YMMV here, but I dropped my iPod Touch from 4 feet or higher directly onto the cement at least a dozen times. I can attest it was near indestructible to me. And when I sold my Touch it didn't even have any noticeable marks on the screen. Stupid name, good technology.

You are an absolute fucking genius! That's what I'm going to do. And since so many of my dress socks are getting worn & are missing mates, I'll buy 20 pairs of black, 20 pairs of brown (matching my shoes), and 50 pairs of white. I've actually grown annoyed that socks seem to change slightly from year to year - the width of the band around the ankle gets wider or narrower & it's a pain to bother matching socks.

shattered iphone 4 screens? ive seen a couple at work already. glass is still brittle. as strong as it is (and it's great in compression), tension will screw glass up big time.

sure you can pre-stress glass and use tempering and stuff, but this doesn't change the fact that glass is still going to be brittle.

No doub this will become an interesting lawsuit.

This brand is what came to mind first, and after looking them up, they have nothing to do with Corning.

The company is family-owned and operated and prides itself on its family-atmosphere and fun-but-serious products.

The iP4 does not use Gorilla Glass.

There's alternative glass technology that is just as strong if not stronger as far as optics and windows are concerned.

The reason why gorilla glass is coming into use today is because LCD panels use soda-lime glass, which gorilla glass is a form of.

Also in the past, LCDs were already bulky. Strengthening their glass wouldn't really save on weight, and adding a $50 premium isn't really worth it on a TV. How often does a person really break a TV? It's not like it's going into your pocket regularly.

Lots of great inventions in the past have sat around going unused until a really good use was found for them, or the cost came down.

I am watching some tips on youtube.

And I think the name is great, actually. A LITTLE low class, but very obvious what it does. Gorilla Glue, sold all over the place with a picture of a gorilla gives the immediate impression it's badass and so does this glue.

I hope it takes off. Corning is not far away and what's good for them is probably good for me after enough trickling down

Kids, large dogs and cats

we just need to perfect it in combination with bezel-less LCDs. then eyefinity would have an actual use

If we as a society got together and euthanized all pets and kids that break electronics, eventually we'd only be left with the pets and kids that don't break electronics. It's selective breeding at work.

It's interesting that they never (apparently) patented this, instead, electing to keep it as a trade secret.... Given the number of people/firms patenting everything these days, it seems like an unusual choice.
