This is how bad Winblows 10 is.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1kGMCfb2xw

Now let the naysayers post crap that it's no different with your phone and other excuses. I mean, would you let me put a flipping keylogger on your computer? After all, it's no different then your phone and all that, right?

Interesting that the DoD is pushing Winblows 10.

They'll probably have the enterprise/LTSB version which I've used and it seems to have all the crap stripped out of it.

I haven't run any packet traces so I don't know how much telemetry is going on in the background but that could easily be stopped at the edge of the network.

Its weaponized, just like everything else in our capitalist oligarchy. Your phone, your job, the media, your health insurance, its all designed to take as much as possible from you, and give the least value they can get away with yielding to you.

Most of this stuff we already know about, but what I found interesting in the video is the way the new Edge browser bypasses the host file after placing a block.

Some of the things I don't like are the constant reissuing of KB's that you have already don't want or disabled. They just re-baggage them. I'm still on 7 on all my systems. I have all this stuff blocked as much as I can - using GWX Control Panel and Anti Beacon.

OK, it is no different than your phone, or doing searches with google/bing/whatever, or using chrome or using VPNs, or anything else, you are still tracked.

If you are asking, would it be better if all this extra stuff wasn't in win 10?
Then that depends, better for whom? Better that they don't have telemetry data to be able to fix things? Better for privacy? Again, that depends on many factors.
Should it be a user choice if they want to participate in this? Yes, they should be able to opt completely out.

Is most of this stuff also in win 7 & 8? Yes.
Don't believe me? Fire up wireshark, and look what is going across the network.
OS X? Yeah, they track you as well.
Linux? They have parts of what the others do, but, it is much easier to get what you want with a flavor of linux.
Is this stuff needed to make the product better? Yes, it goes with usage patterns, and if they can optimize what most people are doing to make it faster, or fix things faster, then people would like that.

There hasn't been one post or video that can say, without a doubt that they are keeping an eye on you specifically.
It is one huge pool of data with identification data stripped.
This has been going on every time people send crash data in order to fix things... but, I don't see people yelling about that, which can contain lots of personal info before they strip the data from those.
Have you talked to some of the engineers that work (or have worked) at MS about this?
They all tell you the same thing about what they are doing with the data.

MS is one huge company, you think they could keep a lid on what is going on with the data if the identification marks weren't strip out ?
They aren't stupid, they wouldn't sacrifice their business just so they could capture an individual's data stream without a court order.

So, yeah, this is FUD.
Some of the examples are, searching using Cortana.. yes, it *gasps* sends data to the cloud, and tries to get back what you are searching for.
It is no different than entering a search term in google/bing/whatever, it does the exact same thing.
It doesn't send all your files to the cloud either, unless you have onedrive, then, it only sends the files that you specify.
Hosts files have been manipulated in the past to point to shady sites, so, there is a way to double check what the DNS should be, compared to what is listed in the hosts file.
The other examples given are also full of holes.

These people do it for the hits and the ad revenue this brings in, nothing more.

The enterprise version has additional options available to further disable telemetry and the likes which can be controlled via GPO. On the home/pro versions you can turn down telemetry to 1 (out of 4) while on an enterprise version you can turn it completely off to 0 or at least I think that's the general idea[1]. But as you said you could probably just block that stuff if necessary.

Your smartphone already is a flipping keylogger. The camera could very well be watching you and the mic could very well be recording you plus you are likely logged into Android or Apple so finding where you are and have been is trivial. If you have a smartphone you have already signed away your privacy. Windows 10 cannot deflower you any more. Sadly.

I'll ask this for the hundredth time: How does a strong firewall in interactive mode not solve this "problem"? You might be surprised at what other telemetry it reveals too, for example; Nvidia's drivers now send daily telemetry to Nvidia's GFE servers, even if you've not installed GFE. That's right, even if you only choose drivers on installation, the telemetry service still get's installed and activated. It's sending data of a very similar nature to that which Windows 10 sends, so why aren't you all jumping up and down about that? And of course Nvidia's installer has sent telemetry on installation and uninstallation of drivers for a long time now.

I've read that the telemetry is deep in the OS, perhaps kernel and that a software-based firewall can't stop it. Don't know if that's true or not. I would have to install 10 into a VM to find out. Worst case is you could always use an ITX computer with Sophos firewall or PFsense.

Windows 98 was quite heavily criticized at its time due to security and privacy concerns. Better use Windows 95.

I'm not using 98se! LMAO! Dude111 is. Yeah, he should use 95. LOL Why he just doesn't use Linux I'll never know. Plus he uses an ancient IE for his browser!

He has made quite a reputation for staying private. I would have used different user names for all the forums he joins. I've been a member or currently a member of forums he's on. http://dslrpedia.com/wiki/Dude111

If anyone would have listened to last night's interview with Barry Eisler (America & Geopolitics), then one of the things you would have heard him state is, " Following the revelations of whistleblower Edward Snowden, we've learned that the government will ignore surveillance/privacy laws when they think they can get away with it, so the only thing that will stop them is encryption."
=======================================================
Author Barry Eisler held a covert position with the CIA's Directorate of Operations, has been an attorney in an international law firm, and an executive in a Silicon Valley start-up.

It seems it would make sense the reason for all this data collection is for an advertising network that's in the works, and probably why they are so aggressive at pushing 10 on everyone as they need a big audience to advertise to and get data from for the network to be any good. It's free, because you are the product. Think of all the relevant ads they can push to you based on what you do on your computer. The government can also look at this data too, as I'm sure they'll be able to just pay MS a monthly fee for access to it. Makes business sense to me.

As far as phones, I really think there needs to be a Linux equivalant OS for them. I just run a stock OS because that's all there really is, but I hate the fact that there are probably keyloggers and other spy crap built in too, not to mention the fact that almost every app wants access to stuff like your contacts. I don't do a lot on my phone though, my computer is much more important to protect. That's why I run Linux.

Possibly, Microsoft does already serve ads through Bing and through the Store. Even still, the truth is that many features being built today are either centrally designed or influenced by data. Because the Google Keyboard knows about my contacts, I can type a friends first name and it will pull up their last name as a suggestion, a small bit of personalization that can save some time. Autocorrect, word suggestions, etc. were all likely features seeded with anonymous user data. Google Inbox's Smart Reply feature was built with email data (though no human ever read an email). Heck, on Swype's website will tell you that "Swype crowd-sources and updates your dictionary with the latest trending words." I can't know for certain but that certainly sounds like code for "we used user data."

Not to mention the obvious benefits error reporting and user analytics has on development and design of products.
