Got a certified letter from my bank - I deposited an empty envelope?

Damn, I just got this certified letter from the bank claiming that I deposited an empty envelope into the ATM machine. This could be bad, I remember signing the check and filling out the deposit envelope, then I made a mistake on the account number and filled out a new envelope. I'm wondering if I left my check in the 1st envelope.......... The thing is, I could swear I switched the check into the new envelope, but I'm not positive.......

Worst case scenerio is someone found the check in the trashcan and cashed it? Best case is that I go to my employer, a hospital, and see if the check has cleared, and if not put a stop payment on it right away and get a new check issued? I don't know what else I can do.

Yep, stop payment will cost you a $25 service fee, but it will prevent someone from taking your whole check. I would do that ASAP.

Sucks to lose a check, but it can't be cashed by just anyone if its made out to you.

When did this happen, maybe you could do some trash digging.

You may not have to stop the payment on it. When i worked at Staples, i lost a paycheck (but later found it), but i knew i lost it in my house. I called up HR and they sent me out a new one within a week. It was pretty cool and convenient.

I deposited it on Thursday right after I picked it up. I'm sure the trash has been long since emptied.

It definitely either got thrown out in the trash or the bank made a mistake. I highly doubt they screwed up, most likely it was me. I remember signing it and putting it in the envelope at the time, but I don't clearly remember switching it to the new envelope. Man I'm kicking myself in the ass for not being more careful, especially since I'm living pretty much hand to mouth these days.

As a bank employee here's what I would recommend doing.

Either call, fax or send a certified letter to your bank ASAP replying to their letter stating exactly what happened (try to make it a concise 1 page letter). Then contact your employer's payroll department and ask them to place a trace on the check, ask them to confirm if it's been cashed or not and I'm sure you know the rest.
