The R4 is a shaped like your normal DS game cartridge, with a slot to insert SD memory card. It let's you download game ROMs from the internet and store multiple games on the R4 cartridge. It's basically a pirating tool that lets you save a ton of money from not buying lots of games. You can read about it by typing DS R4 in google's search bar.

R4 is a flashcard that uses microsd memory cards. it plugs into the DS game card port.

Most people use these for piracy (shame on them!). They can also be used to play homebrew games (for example, I can play my legally-owned copies of Descent and Doom on my DS, and I have a "world of sand" game that's a great time waster), or used for mp3 playback (my main use).

I thought the M3 was the movie player???

m3 and r4 are both the same, both can play movies after conversion.

ok, now I really dont understand, I watched a video on youtube, all the guy did with the R4 was get it from the mail and put it in and boot it up, also I don't understand how u back up your games so you can put them on the micro sc card. what do you mean "conversion"

You need another cartridge device in the GBA slot of your DSL to backup the ROM. As I said in an earlier post, the purpose of the R4 is to d/l free games online so you don't have to pay. The "backup" part people tell you is for LOL.

Conversion as in converting videos you watch on your computer to a format that's compatible w/ DSL.

You should probably seriously consider picking up screen protectors, too. After playing lots of Meteos and DK v Mario 2, my lower screen protector needs to be replaced.

Been using the Hiro Liquid Crystal Screen Protector on my white DSL forever. I play a lot of Zelda and StarFox on it. I see some scratches, but screen still looks clear.

Baked, would you mind NOT advocating piracy?

The purpose of the R4 for those of us who like obeying the law is as a music/video player and for homebrew games. Everyone who's seen me playing Doom/Descent on my DS has been jealous as hell.

I don't know what you're talking about. Stating the obvious and truth is promoting piracy? Did I post any links to pirate sites? I personally don't have a R4/M3, I bought all my DS games new at retail. I'm sure everybody bought R4/M3 to do the legit things you mentioned. Yeah... right.

No, most people buy an R4 to pirate stuff. And they should be ashamed of themselves.

ashamed or not I like to read about stuff. I posted a link, is that a good place to buy, also what is the part I need to get to back my games up for my son. I like the idea of being able to back my sons games up and just let him pick the game off a menu instead of having to take them out and put them in while driving down the road. If somone feels better or has info to share pls feel free to pm me, thanks in advance

That's what I've got on there now. I think I'll try switching my stylus out, maybe this one has a burr on it or something.

Looks like you overpayed a little bit for that M3.

I know with GBA flash carts you basically had a USB cable that plugged into the GBA, put the game in it, and started it up and it would just dump the ROM to your computer. I'm completely unfamiliar with how it works for the DS.

I'm looking to get an R6, which I'm guessing si like an R4 knockoff from dealextreme.com, once I stop being broke.

I did see some cheaper ones, but the shipping seemed higher and a few places I read about, people were waiting on their order for a while, pls let me know if you find a usb thing so I can dump my rom from the DS lite, I really want to be able to back these up, it should be alot easier to use than switching games out all the time and having to worry about losing them/keeping track of them
