Got a GTX 680 2GB. How long will it last???

Got myself a new 680. Been on top of the world and all that. But ive been reading a few threads out here which suggests that i should've waited for the 4GB version or the 685/690 or instead, got the 7970 4GB. I upgraded from a 5870 and dont get me wrong, i am very happy with the performance boost which is almost double if not more. I have a 27" Samsung Led and game at 1920 X 1080 and at all settings maxed.

How long till you guys think that my card might give way? And was it the right choice or should i have waited for the 685/690???

Again, sorry if this is a lame excuse for a thread.

overall a gtx680 is probably about 80% faster than a 5870 so that was a huge upgrade. and really there is no point in always waiting so just enjoy your new gpu.

At 1080p you should be fine for atleast 2 years if you want to max out everything. Battlefield 3 set a really high bar for graphics and to be honest I don't see anything coming out anytime soon that is more GPU stressful than that. Sadly more and more popular titles are becoming mere console ported games with dumbed down graphics.

Woah!!! Thank you guys. I have no plans to switch to multi-monitors and will stick to my 27". So i guess i'm gonna be set for atleast a couple years which is awesome. Thank you all you lovely people.

hmm which game are you talking about? i tried Skyrim and BF3 at 1920 X 1080 and i easily got more than 70FPS at max detail.

well there are a few games such as Clear Sky, Metro 2033, or Witcher 2 where if crank every setting up then you will not maintain 60fps. of course common sense would dictate you turn off or down the setting or two that kills framerates. for instance you should leave ubersampling off in Witcher 2 and advanced depth of field in Metro 2033. most people know to turn off those silly framerate killer settings though and I was mainly poking fun at people like to claim they run "everything maxed" in a game when they actually don't.

oh ok. My god, The Witcher 2 gives trouble to a 680??? Did not know that. Got decent enough framerates playing at high settings with my 5870. Will have to check out its performance with the 680. Thanks my man.

Btw doesnt ubersampling make the game look incredibly better or is it just an AA variation??

1920 with ubersampling on. without googling it, I am not sure exactly how ubersampling differs visually but it sure does tank the framerates.

you mean 590 because the 680 is usually about 30-35% faster than a 580.

Hmm have already completed the game, but will reinstall today for a second playthrough and tweak the settings to its max. Will see how much ubersampling the card is able to take and let you guys know. Thanks.

Why? 4GB will just be 2-3GB unused.

Nope. The only way to even get there is using unoptimized community developed texture packs.

The official Skyrim HD pack runs on much much less

It will last a very long time, it's a good piece of hardware but more importantly is that we're seeing stagnation in the games industry because everything is a console port and has to run on 6 year old hardware.

When new consoles come out, its going to be hard.

Also, new hardware becomes old in a matter of years because games are becoming more heavy.

You put alot of faith into upcoming consoles. Just look at the Wii U. Much much less than people expected/hyped.

Personally I doubt new consoles will have more than 1GB for graphics. Up from the 256MB or so today.

Yes I am serious. And its due to being optimized.

PS3 for example got 256MB for GPU, 256MB for CPU. The graphics there can best be compared to a Geforce 7800GT.

Xbox360 got 512MB shared. But its essentially the same as PS3. Graphics there can be compared to a x1800 card.

Wii U was hyped into something like a HD4870. It turned out to be more like a HD4650.

I agree. I use a gtx 680 on a 30" monitor and play BF3/SC2/D3 with maxed settings except AA (since I don't see a difference with AA at 1600p) and the most I've even seen it use was 1.5 gb, and typically less than 1 gb.
