Go get a taylor test kit. Shock the pool, scrub down the walls/ floor before doing so. Vacuum. Shock/backwash and rinse the sand filters.

After you have clear water adjust chlorine, calcium hardness, alkilinity, PH, etc.......

Edit: If you PM me a fax number I'll try to dig up my CPO stuff and fax it to you.
You could also take the course.

Probably easier to drain it though......

If it's a house you bought... I'd start from scratch and drain the whole thing. Never know what the hell has been in there and i sure wouldn't want to find out after you get a nasty rash.

The grass will love the water
I use a 1/6th HP pump that hooks onto a garden hose.
Less runoff with a small pump

Ummm... If it were me moving into a new house with pool I wouldn't even think twice about getting into the pool even if it was crystal clear. Drain, scrub at least once, and refill and your choice of chems. Unless you know the history of the place it is hard to tell what heck kind crap (pun or not) might be in that pool. Of course I don't swim in public pools either.

EDIT:
I see now FrankyJunior is thinking the same thing

Will this water kill my grass? If it has been sitting all winter with no chemicals. Because my lawn REALLY needs water

Does it need 10,000 gallons of water though?

Dude, don't drain it!

Just put in about 10 gallons of walmart bleach in it and let it sit for a day. Make sure all the filtering equipment is off and brush down the sides. The next day if it is not clear, repeat the bleaching and brushing procedure. After a few days (depending on how bad it was originally), the green will go away and the water will appear cloudy.

When this happens, turn on the filtering equipment and use some clarifier to get rid of the cloudiness. That should get it in decent condition. Take a sample of the water to Leslie'spool supply regularly and they will tell you what to add to keep it clean.

Let me know if this helps.

take a sample of the water to the local pool place and they will test it comepletely and tell you what you need
They'll probably just tell you they need $$$$ worth of chemicals, which of course you can conveniently buy from them...

Meh, it's cheap and easy to drain it... Unless you get several days on torrential downpour while you're trying to drain it
