Finally got a job for the school year since my summer job decided to ask me to leave because I couldn't work full time anymore. Applied at a grocery store and within 24 hours I had a job. Unfortunately I make half of what I made this summer, but have flexible hours. Has anyone else been a courtesy clerk before? Is life going to suck for me? I start on Monday.

Really depends on your attitude and customers. Just gotta try to be nice to the customers. if you get an irate one, or one just giving you hard times just call the manager. least thats what i always did. if it was a jerk customer then let the manager deal with it

That is market square, couple miles west of superstar (where the new lowes is), the only decent dim sum in Colorado. I do all my shopping at pacific ocean, so you all aren't that far away.

true, but ill be making dog shit change there...

Think of it this way. You could be making dog shit change working in an air conditioned grocery store behind a desk for 8hr days. Or, you could be making the same dog shit change working in a hot warehouse for 10hr days moving heavy boxes mindlessly from one truck to another, without knowing if you'll have a job the next day.

I've done the latter and I don't recommend it. It's pretty much the most miserable job you can do in this country. All day/temp labour too. Did it one summer while at university. Never again.

So is a "courtesy clerk" just a bagger? Because it sounds like it should be way more awesome than that, like a grocery-centric concierge, assisting me with all my most outlandish grocery requests.

DON'T SQUISH MY FUCKING BREAD PEON

I used to bag groceries, pretty easy and good exercise walking carts to peoples cars.

keep the cold stuff together, the heavy stuff on the bottom and put the household cleaners in a separate bag.

it sounds better than it is. i basically bag groceries and collect carts. sometimes help old ladies and throw away food when people return half eaten watermelons. because that apparently happens all the time.

It's alright. I did it at first my over-the-table job at Safeway. I would never go back but I don't regret it.

Well, have fun. You will deal with the best AND worst.

i did some computer based training today....bullshit really. teaches you common sense. i sat there for 5 hours wanting to blow my brains out...thinking of how someone could be so stupid as too not know that shit. i walked out of the room and immediately was reminded why....5 people in the break room couldnt figure out how to open the dvd player to put in a training video....the lable was in bright colors clearly saying open.

the training took so long the hiring manager wasnt there and i didnt know what in the hell i was supposed to do....so i kinda just left. but i have a training to go to on wednesday where they are going to teach me how to bag groceries -_- im already kinda hating it. all this common sense training....and part of the pre-requisite to the job is that you have common sense! good news is...after 30 days she said i can take as much time off for school as i needed.

fuck yea.

I worked at Kroger's grocery for 5 FIVE years starting when I was 17. What I nightmare lol. Its been a good 15 years since I quit and I still have dreams about working there like high school dreams.

I was a bagger/grocery clerk for the first 2 years and a cashier the last 3. Bagging is better. As a bagger you don't have to deal with the customers as much and you can run away from the registers to get carts, clean, or just goof off in the back. Playing with the cash register isn't as fun as it looks when you are 5 years old.

i bagged groceries at kroger in high school. one night a guy i worked with went nuts and broke a mop in half and tried stabbing a manager with it. that was the best time i had the whole time i worked there.

haha thats what im gathering....whenever im done bagging groceries i can just peace out and go do my own thing. i just hate how they pay you dog shit change...the store pulls in 1.2mil a week and still pays their employees minimum wage. my friends been there 2 years and has only gotten a 45cent raise.

I know exactly what you mean. I spent 4 years working in a grocery store (15-19). First 6-8 months was bagging, then cashiering from then on out. The one good thing about being a cashier is I'd get more hours. But dealing with some customers - you want to pull your hair out. Would rather bag than be a cashier, but I'd rather stock/level shelves than bag.

Grocery stores generally have really thin profit margins. And why not pay minimum wage? Lots of turnover in service jobs like that, so it isn't worth paying that much more.

I started off just above minimum wage; joined the union and got a raise + 1.5 pay on Sundays and holiday pay (extra 4 hours of pay for nothing if you worked on a holiday), so it wasn't too bad. It's okay if you're in HS or something or just trying to make some money in college.
