I can't wait to pick this up next weekend. Temper OX Platinum frameset, disc brakes 25mm-42mm tires for offroad riding. You can take this bike almost anywhere. Nice paint job...

I have a motorcycle, that good enough for you?
Nice looking bike even though it looks like it cant make up its mind on whether it's a road bike or a mountain bike.

Never seen any of the Salsa road bikes, but I know their mountain bikes are awesome. Looks nice - please tell me you got the orange? I hate it when people get typical colors, but that's a nice looking bike.

Nice bike! A skillful rider can take a cyclocross bike through all but the most technical mountain bike trails. This should be a great bike.

It's a cyclocross bike. It can do both but not great at either.

I got orange. it's the only color available for this bike. It?s my ride to work through some rough streets and paths, so it should be perfect for that. And cyclo-cross, some people say they?re the best things of street biking and mountain biking, mixed. I don?t plan on doing crazy mountain biking shit on this but will definitely put on some fatties occasionally and hit some trails.

I've got a Surly Cross Check, also in bright orange. I can tell you that a cyclocross bike will be slower than a road bike, and there's not much you can do about it aside from using 23mm tires, which sorta defeats the purpose of going cyclocross in the first place.

Nice bike. I have a 2008 Gary Fisher Wingra (Hybrid bike) myself. I've probably put about 300 miles on my bike this summer using the trail along Lake Michigan.

Nice bike. I'm still getting around on a few year old Giant Boulder SE myself. The ole lady though has a Trek Top Fuel 98. But she's more of an off roader. I like both worlds.

Just because you can doesn't mean you'd want to...

Anyways, it sounds like the OP got it for good reason

I don't know if I'd want to give up front suspension depending on how rough the roads really are, but the OP would obviously know better about that than I would

When I was a kid, my 6th grade teacher was the significant other of the owner of Salsa, so we got to take a tour of their manufacturing shop and paint our own little 6" cuts of bike frame to take home with us. I got a bunch of Salsa stickers and plastered them all over my little DiamondBack when I got home. It was a really good field trip.

The way I thought it was is this: The only difference between a CX frame and a road frame is the brake style, the rear triangle to accommodate the bigger tires and also the fork.

My understanding was in fact that the CX frame will generally be slightly less aggressive, but also with usually have a higher bottom bracket than a standard road frame. That's the case with my Surly Cross Check, anyway.

Yeah, it should have a higher bottom bracket for clearance but it also should have beefed-up gussets for the head-tube..

too much. A little over $1600. Anyways it should pay its self off after a while from the gas $ I'm not spending on driving a car. And the last couple of posters are correct. Traditionally, CX bikers used old steel road bikes for winter training. Ones they could throw around and not worry about. Now that they make CX bikes I believe the frames are a more relaxed upright geometry.

Niiiiiice. I came very close to building up one of those this spring. I ended up saving my money so I can move to somewhere that I can actually ride, instead. There's really nothing else like it. Pretty much all the cx frames with disc mounts you can get are AL, and all the steel ones have no disc mounts. My plan was to put some really fat tires on it, dirt-drops with bar-end shifters, my worn-in brooks, and basically ride it everywhere. Sweet bike.
