You bragging about 8gb of ram and a i5 proc? My phone has more than that. What did you have before a PII With a turbo button?

It's better than some.

I have an i7 4600u / 8Gb / SSD. It does everything I need, as much as I'd like more.

I am a cheap bastard though so I don't want to upgrade.

I doubt you're a cheap bastard, you just spend your money on other things that you find more enjoyable like a turbo boost button that makes an invisible ramp magically appear in front of your 1980s black trans am or something not entirely like that at all but rhymes with servo.

You guys just can't be happy for the guy? You have to berate him for ... uh ... I can't even think of a reason...

Depending on where he works that PC could be the equivalent to an uber top of the line work station. I've worked for large companies where they had ancient PC's.

This is ATOT. Welcome. This must be your first time so I'll guide you through the setup process so you can enjoy iATOT aka hatetot today.

People here don't need a reason to berate each other. That is to say they don't need a good reason. It comes naturally to them like venom to a King Cobra or stench to a homeless person, or pretty much anyone who doesn't shower. Moonbeam would say it stems from self hate. I would say the origins are based in fear. Sometimes I joke condescendingly because I am literally making fun of hatetot right under their noses but unbeknownst to them. I'm not sure unbeknownst is actually a word. I don't really care. Sometimes my humor is purposefully undetectable so I don't blame people when they don't get it. Sometimes I'm serious and they don't get that either. The human mind will almost always subconsciously reject ideas that don't fit pre-existing ideas of people's world-view or self-view. This makes it difficult for them to learn things that might be true in reality but "not true" for them. This has been a public service announcement of the emergence of thought broadcast system. If this had been an actual emergency you would have been directed....blah blah blah

I work at a company that updates your stations reasonably often (every 2-3yrs or so). Right now I have a 3rd gen I5 and 8gb RAM in my laptop.

Depending on where he works that PC could be the equivalent to an uber top of the line work station. I've worked for large companies where they had ancient PC's.

Worth repeating. We had to campaign to get just to get the memory doubled in our laptops. Excel tables wrote so slowly you could watch them happen.

You bragging about 8gb of ram and a i5 proc? My phone has more than that. What did you have before a PII With a turbo button?

my work laptop is better than that

gotta have a buttload of RAM to run like 5 websphere servers at a time

Ours is as needed. Well....for the office drones. I just buy something if I need it.

Right now my desktop is an HP Pro with an i5 and 8GB of RAM, lappy is a Yoga Pro 2 with an i7 and 8GB. Drones get Lenovo Mini PCs with i5s.

My work laptop, which is less than a year old, has an i7 processor and only 8GB of ram. But the worse part about it is that it is running 32-bit Windows 7 Professional. WTF?

This place is wonky. 5 people doing the same job could have 5 different laptops. I know one developer who has 32gb mem and an I7... we probably "need" an I3 and 4gb max... we're not hosting any VM's or even compiling code really.

How else would a dev write shitty code with tons of memory leak and not notice?

Our problem is no two people do the same thing here. The IT director tried to do the right thing and ordered a bunch of really decent HP laptops to issue to people. But since then he's had to order SP3s, Yogas, MBPs and other high end stuff because so many of use do so many different jobs that an out of the box computer just won't work.

That's actually super awesome for a work machine. Work machines tend to be about 5-10 years behind what people will have at home. I wish we could have 8GB of ram. Our machines don't even support more than 4, then again XP does not either so what would be the point.

Our machines are core 2 duos with 4GB of ram. Used to be like 1GB by default till our department managed to get approved to get 4. Worse part is they're working on upgrading to 7, and instead of giving new machines that have more ram they're upgrading the existing machines. It's going to be bloody slow as hell. We don't even have enough ram left over as is, it's going to be brutal with 7.

A few years back we did buy a SSD on our corporate card though and switched to that. Made a huge difference. Instead of taking about 45 minutes to an hour to open all our stuff it now takes MAYBE 10 minutes.
