Got a Prius C

Posted a couple of threads on car ideas. Was on borrowed time on my Aurora (02 with 221k miles). Transmission was starting to go. And my 94 Miata as a daily driver wasn't going to cut it.

I'm hedging on $6/gal gas prices in the future during the life of this vehicle. I was really wanting the Two, as I don't care for leather/navigation. The local dealer only was getting a Four in, and I only drive white cars, and no other dealers had anything in white. So I spent about $4k more than I wanted to. Had to pay sticker. I did get the GM to buy me a Diet Coke at least.

Bought it Thursday morning, but wasn't able to make room for 3 cars until yesterday morning when I picked it up. I've pulled all the dealer stickers off already, except for the license plate frame, which I'll replace.

Dash. Last trip shows 74.8mpg. About a 5 mile drive from a diner back up to work.

Seats are growing on me. Very comfortable, but there is a lot of pattern to the design. I like they are light in color. You can tell it's not leather (though others have been fooled who have sat in it). Feel like very high quality seat covers (which I guess is all they really are).

I pulled the little loops that hold the cover up down. Could see them in the rear view. I took the headrests and put them in the back as well. Could probably get rid of the seatbelt too, won't have many folks riding in back.

Probably hard to see, but the little spot at the front left of the handle is where you put your hand to lock the car. Think this is only on the three and four. Key is just a little fob thing with a backup key that pops out. Kinda nifty with push button start.

Dang, that's a lot of stuff crammed in there.

After the initial downer I get after making large purchases, I'm really digging the car. Has quite a bit of wind noise at highway speed, but rides well. I'd have preferred 15" wheels, but it came with the 16"s. No rattles and never feels unpredictable. Much better driving than I expected. Doesn't compare to my 94 Miata, but not terrible like a bus.

Haven't had a chance to mess with anything display wise. I already have XM and only listed to Opie and Anthony, so once I figured that out, I quit tinkering.

Not sure what the B on the shift column is, something to do with engine braking I think. I did notice in the manual it says to accelerate to the speed you want, then lift off the accelerator entirely, then push it back down. Wonder how many folks will read that.

I was amused at the instructions for the drivers floor mat that were repeated probably 30 times in all the literature. Lawyers, meh.

I still think the Two is probably the best bang for the buck, but I needed a car and didn't have time to wait and find one. Mine came from Gulf States Toyota (importer).

Port installed options were:

3M window tint (they did a really good job fwiw)
Rear bumper plastic guard thing
Cargo net
Carpeted floor mats
Some paint/fabric protection thing. $300, thought it was BS, but dealer wouldn't back off of it since it was a port install and not a dealer install. So had to bite it.

Need to get a windshield shade for it, and would like some mudguards.

I know the insight isn't as good on MPG, but its cheaper and has a better driving feel from the reviews I've read.

Did you consider one?

A Prius C Four was on my list. I like the fuel economy, but I think it will be two small for a family.

Wow, they really redid the interior too. I don't know about paying $4K more for white. You gotta really really like white. Is that console shifter still a spring back device like was on the dash of previous models?

Not really. After I read the Prius C reviews, any that addressed the Insight said Honda might as well give up. For the same price, the C does everything better.

Just a single dude, most I'll have to carry would be dogs.

I like that white doesn't get as hot in the summer. It's routinely 60+ days of 100 degree+ temps in summer. I'm done with anything but white cars.

And the shifter is now like a real car (Edmund's words). No spring back, just like a normal shifter. And this isn't the same car as a Prius, it's an all new model from Toyota.

how much did you pay for it?

I'm considering it, but will probably get the second model year, don't want to pay sticker right now due to demand.

Keep us updated on mileage, and thoughts as you drive it more. I've thought about picking one of these up.

Wow why was the markup 4k? Did they know you only wanted white and no other dealers had them?

Why only drive white?

that bit confused me too, why would you pay 4k more for a mini prius, when you can just get the regular one for cheaper(22k-24k around here).

the whole point of a hybrid is to save money by using less fuel, how much do you have to drive to save 4k in gas?

He paid $4k extra for the "Four" trim level over the "Two" trim level that he originally wanted.

Ah okay. I hate Prius naming conventions. Don't need 5 different names for different trim options for the same car.

Would you have been able to have one on order from the dealer and just wait out the delivery time for that 4k? Or were your cars going to die in the next 8-12 weeks?

What he said ^^

Sorry if I said it goofy. I wanted the C Two, which runs about $22k. I didn't pay $4k over sticker, just $4k than the trim level I was looking for.

Price was:

$23,320 MSRP
$760 destination
$1,150 for moonroof/16" wheels (which I didn't care about, but eh, I'm kinda liking the sunroof)
For $25,140.

Can't remember the breakdown on the other stuff, floor mats, cargo mat, cargo net, tint, etc. but it brought it right to $26k.

My current car is just day by day. Could have gone tits up at any moment, needed something now. Could have gotten something else, but $4k ain't the end of the world. It's just money, I'll make more.

The "B" is engine breaking. When you choose it the engine shifts down and lets the RPMs wind down to recharge the battery. Basically the "B" is a KERS button. I use it to slowly slow myself down when I would normally (in any other car) let myself idle to a stop or any other instance.

for 26k, you could've bought a regular prius, with some change to spare.

kinda defeats the purpose of a cheaper prius and saving gas money.

but whatever, nice car.

Nice car, and I LOVE the Prius (original), but...

I can't believe they keep using that POS indicator/meter panel. It looks like they recycled an '80s era computer. The Honda Civic's digital speedometer is beautiful. Looks like they used the Camry style shifter too - not a fan.

Oh well, it's still a Prius, which is awesome.

I did not know that, now I have another reason to hate hybrids.

I guess that's not true. We have the CRZ which is available in manual of course. The first generation Civic Hybrid was also available with a manual, though they're rare.

It looks like the Fusion hybrid also is available in a manual. That's refreshing.

The Prius never had a manual option though.

OK I'll just use this as another reason to hate Prius' rather than all hybrids.

It's more or less the same price as the C but worse on gas. Honda has dragged their feet with hybrid for years now and are losing relevance.

Congrats on the c, 53 mpg city is kick ass.

They are confusing and suck.

MSRP on a liftback prius is actually $24,000. The problem with the C is its main competitor is the liftback and once it gets optioned out at all the liftback starts looking very attractrive--it's rated the same overall on fuel economy but is appreciably larger and a little quicker as well.

The prius lineup will sell like hotcakes going into this summer. No great deals to be had I'm guessing with gas where it is.

You really need to get over this. I used to hate automatics too but what happened to me is what happens to everybody, we stop defining a car by whether it's auto or manual. Manuals are dying and you need to come to terms with it. Moreover, the transmission of the Prius is such that giving it a manual would be really a terrible idea, not to mention very possibly impossible.
OK I'll just use this as another reason to hate Prius' rather than all hybrids.
You obviously know next to nothing about the Prius since until now you didn't even realize that this hybrid, by far the most popular in the world (selling more than all other hybrids combined), which has been out for more than a decade, has never had a manual transmission. And yet you already hated it and hate it now. It's like me hating quarks or the personality traits of kangaroos.

wow for 25k the interor really isnt that high grade...toyota seems to be slipping really badly. hell the interor is cheap and plasticy on my 07 chevy cobalt base model but when you could buy that car for 12k OTD its to be expected. this is plastic sprinked with tech bits. its kind of a let down to the outside which is nice with the exception of the the chrome tails.
