I am going to, just going to let them pay for the $3000 vmware training first.

I am not trying to be an ass...but yes...after 6-7 years...you are underpaid.

OP: stick it out for a bit, finish your cert and get the hell out of there.

Make sure you explain this clearly in your next interview, that you were doing the work of a sys admin but without the title. This is not a great place to be.

It is NOT a good idea to get your cert and then immediately bail. If most of your professional experience is at that job and you leave them high and dry you do not want to use them as a reference.

Shouldn't the raise increase and not decrease?

wtf?

I thought the same thing, but I guess he is saying his raise amount should increase each time he gets a raise. ie he got a $2k raise and now is only getting a $1k raise.

Since he made it so confusing, I say he doesn't deserve a raise!

No after my first year I got 3K with no certs/help desk. Now I am a sys admin, with MCSA and soon to be vmware cert but only got a 2K raise and another 1K once I pass the vmware test.

This is why people switch jobs...you start at a higher salary instead of work your way up to it.

The funny part is our marketing guy makes 120k and golfs all day and works like 20 hours a week lol. But the 3 IT guys who keep our company in business make shit. Our credit union is our only client that is keeping us in biz.

Get used to it...that's life.

VCP4 Certification? If they expect that level of expertise from you, I'd expect them to pay you decently as well..

For what it's worth, you have a lot more ground to argue on once you actually have that certification.

It's irresponsible to tell him he could be making $100k+ when all you know next to nothing about his abilities and experience.

I totally agree well I am hoping to take the exam in Oct. So I will pass it then wait it out until after xmas and see whats out there. Plus they are like we will need you to start doing patches and stuff after midnight on certain days. I def dont make enough to be up all night working on upgrades etc

yup...the higher you get, the less work you do. you spend most of your time taking care of bs and you stretch it out to whole day projects, when in reality it is a 2 hour project.

Go to salary.com to see where you think you should be. Also look at job boards for other openings to gauge where you're at and where you think you should be. This will help a lot after you get strong with vmware and jump ship for much more money.

Also pay attention to the poster that said you've fallen into a trap of being underpaid. This can greatly affect your career as you never really view your worth appropriately and tend to undervalue your skills. At 5-7 years of experience you need to be ramping up very quickly in compensation and picking something to become an expert in. Vmware experts do make a pretty penny, but you have to be an expert so figure out how to get there.

Sometimes it's based on what money you bring to the company. The costs and time you save the company is usually overlooked.

He could be golfing with clients or potential clients. It probably includes wining and dining with clients too. Luckily for him part of his job is something that he enjoys a lot.

we had a group of electricians use our company to get their journeymans. assholes. they used our company to pay for it, didnt even give 6 months to help pay it back before leaving for a "better" job. funny part was telling them no when they came back in 8 months looking for full time work.

if youre going to get free certs from this company, give them a while of service to help "pay back" that burden they took on for you. also, if they are willing to front 3k to train you, sounds like they are relying on benefiting from that investment.

Sounds like my department. Promotion first, raise later. Just a lazy manager who keeps forgetting to put it into the budget.

Just be glad your getting a raise. Last year they took away our merit raise and this year they took away our cost of living increase, sucks. But I just got a promotion that came along with an ~9% raise and I'll get another 9% in a year after my probation is up. If they bring back merit and cost of living.. giggity giggity.
