You have to consider the entire scenario, he's gotten fucked long term by getting way underpaid for the work he does.

OP, you've worked for 6-7 years and you're complaining about this? Damn you are stupid. How can you have worked for so many years and not realize that raises don't automatically increase from year to year?

This is why people switch jobs...you start at a higher salary instead of work your way up to it.

The funny part is our marketing guy makes 120k and golfs all day and works like 20 hours a week lol. But the 3 IT guys who keep our company in business make shit. Our credit union is our only client that is keeping us in biz.

lolIT

i can't wait to get paid 120k to golf.

In the company I work for it does. We get yearly raises, my boss even admitted that he just forgot I had been here for over 2 years now and apologized.

Dude I just started at 43k as "Desktop Support Specialist" for a STATE school. Gov jobs are usually already underpaid; I had oh... 2 months help desk experience from my internship and they didn't even interview me in person. I interviewed on the phone for a temp position at like 30k and got hired full time 6 months later.

Soooo with 7 years exp I'd say you are pretty damn underpaid id I am making the same with essentially zero experience outside of college.

If in 7 years I am making less than like 60k I am leaving.

Maybe IT is just way over hyped. As the market becomes saturated it will become less valued. That?s how it works.

This. I have 3 years of VMware experience and have the VCP. My current job blows because I don't get to work on VMware or the SAN much because others with more seniority "like it." Living in South Dakota I make $56k but want to move to a bigger city and get a System Architecture position.

Good for you!

Your career and direction is in your hands. Make the most of it. IT still brings a pretty penny in terms of compensation (100-200K). But you have to truly become an expert. And one can become an expert with 5-7 years experience provided that is GOOD experience/exposure.

My last job was awesome experience and exposure but my current one is nil. Hopefully my previous boss will no longer be with the former company soon so I can go back, provided they pay well. If not, I'm going to continue to look for positions in the Twin Cities area.

I talked to my boss again. He said after I get my VCP cert in October they want me to transition my MCSA into MCSE asap. This is getting hilarious

I wouldn't call it hilarious. If they're paying for all that then suck it all up and jump ship when you've got your certs.

They are but just that they think I am gonna stick around for 40k with all these certs. I am gonna have a meeting with him after I get this and tell them I need more money, like 55k. Because if they think they can replace me with someone who already has these certs with what they are paying me 40k the guy is gonna laugh at them.
