I recently added a Seagate 400gb 7200.10 PP drive to my system, I partitioned 120 for the boot and the rest for various stuff. Anyway. I have been working with comps and HDs since the stoneage and notice that the 7200.10 sounds different than any HD I have ever had. Its not the "click of death" or any such type of DOOM sound, it just sounds different than other drives I have worked with, and I have worked with em all. Anyone else notice that the Perpendicular drives sound different than other drives? BTW, in case anyone asks, I have very overly sensitive hearing. I can literally hear a fly land, so it just may be my highly sensitive hearing.

The "clunk clunk" seek noise is normal for the non-OEM drives. Some also produce a high-pitch whine. I've pretty much gotten used to both after a few months.

i have a 15K scsi perpendicular recording drive and to me it sounds the same when read/writitng as other 15K and 10K scsi hdds i have used in the past. but, i woudn't call my hearing good and i have 5x80mm fans, a 120mm in the psu and a 92mm on the cpu along with the fan on the x1800xt, so maybe it is getting drowned out.

Not sure if you just mean the noise the drive makes while it's powered on or while it is 'working', but SPCR had noticed rather loud and distinctive seeks from the 7200.10s.

It's likely that a different read/write head is being used on the perpendicular recording drives, and maybe a new/different actuator as well. So I wouldn't be surprised if they sound a little different.

Its the different sound I notice when it is being used. Kind of hard to explain but it sort of sounds like a soft wood creeking sound.

Welcome to the club. I have two of these drives, one purchased in Sept. and one last week. Both were from Frys B&M. Both make a very loud grinding sound when being accessed. I tired to return the second one to Frys and guess what? The p/n and model number on the outside of the box on the sticker with the bar code does NOT match the sticker on the hard drive itself. The serial number is the same. According to the Seagate website the model listed on the outside of the box refers to the 7200.9 while the actual drive is labeled as a 7200.10 . And Frys, being the as*holes that they are, claimed that I was running a scam trying to return a different drive that whan the box and receipt stated. Nevermind that the serial number was identical. I called Seagate, ended up in India, and, after giving the person the various number/letters, was told that the drive was legit and that "sometimes Seagate uses different labels on their boxes". They offered to RMA the drive, at my cost for shipping, and send me a new one but they would not issue a refund. That was something Frys would have to do. I am going to return to Frys one more time and start screaming and demanding that they open some more of the boxes that they have in a large pile. I just want my money back. I don't expect any success with their reputation for screwing over people with misslabled products or outright seconds. I'll probably have to deal with the credit card company on this one.

Any RMA I ever had (very Few) cost me a total of $4.05 to ship back with Priority Mail and that was that, done, no hassle with the place I bought the drive from

I've got a 320GB version 7200.10. From my perspective it's quiet.
I didn't notice any different sound than from other HDs. I've heard everything from a high pitched whine to quiet dull clicking (from accessing), and everything in between.
The 7200.10 ranks as one of my quieter drives. About the only 7200rpm HD that's quieter would be the Samsung Spinpoint (from my experience).

Bummer. The sound is not loud or grinding, just different. I had a simular issue with the warranty. I also got mine from frys. I checked the S/N and model on Seagates website and it showed that the drive was OEM from a PC company and that it was under the PC companies warranty and not Seagate. I called Seagate and explained to them the issue and they said to fax them a scan of the HD and the UPC. So I scanned and emailed them the images and in less than a week th HD now registers on Seagates website as having a 5 year warranty.

I have the same drive as you (2 of them in RAID 1 configuration), and I also noticed they are some of the quietest drives that I have owned.
