See what the state rules are for setting up the speed limit.

There was a story how a guy got out of his ticket when he looked up the review for the road he was ticketd on. If the review was not done then the posted speed limit is not legal.

If you want to get out of it you will need to use every trick in the book.

I just got a ticket today on my way home for going 60MPH on a 40MPH zone. It's the first time I get a ticket, though.

The road I was at didn't have much lightning so it would've been pretty much impossible to see the posted speed limit, which I'll have to check if there was one even posted. Some other things are that the cop didn't have any lights on at all, so obviously I did not see him. He only turned his lights on when he was behind me, and afterwards he also turned on those blinking lights they have on top of the cruiser. And, obviously, it's fucking 12:30AM and there's no traffic at all so it's not like what I was doing was unsafe. The ticket was for $150, and obviously I don't want to pay that. What should I do?

Why is the word speeding in quotes? Sounds like you're trying to escape the reality that you were going 20 over the posted speed limit. The fact that it was dark or you didn't know the speed limit means nothing.

This is a troll post isn't it?

Only $150 and 20 over the speed limit? You are getting off easy. If this was on the outerbanks in NC you be fucked. Going that fast there is a federal offense and auto court date. That place has tons of visitors and who is going to drive back like 8 hours and go to court so you have to get a lawyer to care of it. Say good by to your money. I learned the hard way $1,000 out of pocket.

Pay up and move on.

My heart goes out to the OP 'cause I know how much it sucks getting a speeding ticket (gotta man up though), but the members of this forum are absolutely right. The reason traffic laws carry such heavy penalties is because if we forget to follow them, people get seriously injured, or worse, they die. When you're the only one on the road in the middle of the night at you come up to a stop sign, you're expected to do the right thing and follow the traffic laws. Because when you're that guy going through a 2-way stop sign intersection (instead of 4), you'd expect others to do the right thing and obey the traffic laws so that they don't pull out in front of you and cause an accident.

1. You were doing 20mph over the speed limit. Here in Tampa, anything 15mph over the speed limit and the fine is doubled, so it could be much worse.
2. I hate to say it, but ignorance of the law is no excuse. It's your responsibility to find out what the speed limit is. Secondly, I don't know of many places in the US where the speed limit allows in excess of 55mph that isn't labelled a highway or causeway, so that excuse definitely isn't going to fly.
3. Cops don't have to announce their presence to you. There's a reason why those Ford Crown Victoria's are called the Panther platform.

It's not the end of the world though. It's just one speeding ticket. Pay it, learn from it, and move on.

If you need lightning to see the road; you should not be driving at all

The book should be thrown at you for driving under unsafe conditions.

As others have said; what the LEO did has no bearing on the fact. Unless the speed limit dropped from 60 to 40 just when he nailed you; yo did your self in.

Man up; see if you can get it reduced.

Pay attention to your speed!

What kind of road has 40mph speed limit that you think the speed limit is actually 60mph?

The road I was at didn't have much lightning so it would've been pretty much impossible to see the posted speed limit, which I'll have to check if there was one even posted.

So you were driving too fast to see the posted speed.

Some other things are that the cop didn't have any lights on at all, so obviously I did not see him.

So does this mean the cop was hiding to the side. Or that you were driving so fast you couldn't see the other cars on the road as you blew past them?

When it went from safety issue to a money making scheme. There’s a reason insurance companies give away radar detectors to police forces now.

It's always been a moneymaking scheme. If you don't want to pay, don't break the law or don't get caught.

Even some interstates max out at 55. He's trying to pull some mental gymnastics so he can believe he wasn't in the wrong here when in reality, he fucked up and needs to pay.

Dude, if you're going to argue that it was too dark to see road signs, but that it was safe to speed, you're too stupid to live.

I don't always speed, but when I do it's on an unfamiliar road with poor lighting. :whiste:

You were driving 60mph in a 40mph zone at 12:30am on a dark road with poor visibility. That's the reason the cop pulled you over. You were going too fast for the posted speed for those conditions.

If you don't know the speed limit or can't see the signs, slow down to 40mph till you do. Go to court, pay the fine and next time, slow down.

Sorry man, you probably couldn't see the sign because you were going 50% above the posted limit. I don't see much of an option here. Next time slow down.

That was exactly my point. The kind of roads which you would assume you could drive 55/60mph on tend to look drastically different than the ones you would assume a speed limit of 40/45mph on.

Ignorance of the law, is not a defense. Cops do not have to have lights on. You were speeding, by 20mph. Take your lumps and move on, you were fully in the wrong.
