The dog always feels so protective when I'm around, I decided to put my hand over the fence to let him smell me, and it did more than that. I kinda asked for it I guess. Not a good idea to put your hand near a dog's face when it's barking and growling at you. The owners were there and stopped him and he obeyed, then said sorry. They asked if I was ok, I looked at it and I'm like "meh, should be fine" and we moved on with our conversation. That's how we roll here. No lawsuit, no putting the dog down.

The damage: (could have been much worse)

Good man, sucks you got bitten but least your man enough to not sue your neighbor when it was your fault.

It probably wasn't the brightest, sticking your hand into what the dog views as his territory. If you want to get introduced to the dog so he might calm down it's much better to ask the owners to do it. When the owners do it the dog sees that they think you're ok and it will make it go over much better.

I wouldn't call animal control if it was my own fault, but if the neighbor was letting the dog out and it was doing this to people in the front yard/street that's a different story.

The main difference between this story and the other is...
this vicious dog wasn't at a public bus stop.

People shouldn't be in yards that aren't theirs. If it's in the street/sidewalk that's a different issue.

When you enter a dogs yard all bets are off. My German Shepard is so timid, scared of trucks rolling down the street. Another dog/person comes into her domain, 180 degree different. She won't bite strangers but lets you know to watch out..

I was not referring specifically to that story, just in general, it seems everytime someone's dog bites someone they are held responsible and the dog is put down. I totally do not agree with this law unless it's 100% the owner's fault, even then the owner should have to pay a fine, the dog should not be punished for something he/she does not realize was wrong.

In CPA's case it's very unfortunate what he had to go through and nobody should ever have to go through that, especially given the circumstances - was the lady's fault as much as it was my fault in this case. I always wondered if being the victim I would feel differently about my feelings, but this incident made me realize I still feel the same way.

I am amazed at how many people have no idea how to act around dogs. Thank you for at least not being an ass when it was your fault the dog bit you.

Yeah this dog is like that, she(I think?) starts barking like crazy when I go in my own yard. There's only a 3ish foot chain link fence separating it from the neighbor's yard. So when I put my hand on their side, that was it. The owner told me if I would actually go in their yard the dog would probably be ok, but I'm not about to test that. They said the dog has this weird thing when it comes to fences and feels protective if something crosses it. Maybe I'll actually get to see more chipmunks and squirrels this year, they'll all be on my side. lol

that is more of a nip.

Yeah I got lucky. The whole set of fingers made it in it's mouth but it seems only one or two teeth actually hit skin. It still hurts a bit, seems it hit the nail internally. I'll definitely have to keep an eye on it to make sure it wont infect.

One time I was skateboarding slowly down the sidewalk and passed my neighbor's house. The neighbor was out gardening on a strip of her yard right next to the side walk, and she had her dog with her. The dog reached out onto the sidewalk from the yard and bit me. It was in her yard, but I was on the sidewalk.

The dog ended up being euthanized because it also bit my dad (when he was getting the newspaper), some other lady (at a tupperware party) and it bit me once more...

After that the neighbor was pissed at us for supposedly killing her dog. What a dumb bitch, she took her own dogs life by letting it out of the house to bite people then has the balls to blame other people for reporting it. Of course they are going to report it, one of the victims of my neighbor's dog got infected and missed weeks of work. I saw her leg in the courtroom when I was subpena'd because the neighbors tried to save the dog's life by putting it on a farm. Her leg was really infected, it looked really nasty.

Exactly. You come into our house, diff story. Any run ins we've had with other dogs, our dog was on a leash, crazy, I know and they entered her space. One was a 80 pound black lab literally dragging the 10 year old that was walking him running into our yard. He prob outweighed the kid by 20 pounds, but don't get me started on stupid owners...

Especially when he's doing his best to say "Keep out."

Being from up north, I'm surprised you didn't bite the dog back. :sneaky:

Better call Dalton McGuinty (local reference alert!) and report this vicious beast.

My neighbor has two dogs that make it apparent that they don't care for me every time I go to that side of the back yard. I'm not brave enough to stick my hand over the fence, but I appreciate their presence. If anyone else gets into my back yard, they're sure to raise a ruckus. Still, it's kind of annoying being snarled at every time I go into my own yard.

You never ever put your hand out to any strange dog, friendly or not. Always slowly extend your fist and speak softly. Sure beats losing a finger(s).

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this yet.
