Intricate deployment??? So this was someone's work box and instead of going to IT they went to someone outside?

I drove there, and had made it completely usable and faster than it has ever been, but she said because I fixed it so quickly, she couldn't justify paying me so much. In the end she agreed to pay me $25 dollars (she wanted to give me $15.)

I spent about 30 minutes there -- I was so pissed off, I told her to keep her money, and to NEVER ask me to fix her computer again. Needless to say, a few months later, she needed help again, and offered to pay me what I wanted, but I told her to fuck off. lol (Felt bad for my bro-in-law though, he really wanted me to help.)

EDIT: Nuke the shit. Fuck them.

This was a friend of the family? Poorly played...

I would feel terrible accepting $100 for 30 minutes of work from an acquaintance. Demand it? Never. Take the $15 with a smile and if you really hate helping this person don't do it again.

Don't understand how they are burning you?

Make a backup, clean off the system, and give it back to them with the clean hdd.

This thread has no solid information from the OP..... you might want to at least give cliffs notes of what happened

They're paying for the knowledge. It doesn't matter if it takes 10 minutes, or 10 weeks. He made her doorstop work again. $100 was a bargain.

boot & nuke is in the rom.....do i start it?

let me clear this up - no data is on the setup - just the setup was intricate and took quite some time because of many different aspects of the deployment and how the setup will be used. they can d/l the software again and all the keys they can have, i would just be getting rid of the work i am being fucked for, basically giving them back a machine w/ an empty hdd and they would have to have somebody else re-set it up - again, no data has been input into the system yet, just a intricate setup.

yeah, that didn't clear anything up.

I don't destroy my good work, period. You can take that for what it's worth but my good work stands as an example.

If they're refusing to pay for your services, or less than the agreed upon amount, then nuke the system and return at no cost.

If they're just giving you attitude, take their money, give them the machine with work they paid for, and never do another job for them again.

If the former is the case, take a total disc image of the computer, so if they change their tune after receiving a door stop, you can just blow it back on to the drive and not be out any real time. Of course you'd want to be charging extra for recreating your work, on top of the agreed upon original price, just so they know not to pull that kind of crap again in the future.

Without knowing any details from the lackluster OP, this is the best advice I've seen here :^)

Treat other people how you would wish to be treated, OP. Even if they are disrespectful assholes, simply write it off as a lesson learned and never deal with them again. You never reap good from sowing ill will.

ahhh, there are always consequences. You may not intend for them to occur, but they occur nonetheless.

yeah...yeah you do...there is something to be said for fucking someone over that fucked you especially if it is an unprovoked attack.....and that is....revenge is awesome.

however....based on what I have been able to interpret from the OP and having been in the business myself....it is a customer service industry....you leave personal shit at home....you are not much of a businessman if you can't separate the two....sounds to me like the OP set himself up for this if he did the work for someone who is a "piece of shit".

so either:

A- the OP did work for someone he knew had the potential to screw him, rolled the dice and lost

B- is classifying them as a "piece of shit" because they "disrespected" him after the fact.

either way...the OP is fighting a lost cause.

The OP really hasn't explained how he was "burned/jacked/disrespected,", nor whether this was a paying job or a freebie...whether it was friend, family member, or paying customer.

Without those pertinant bits of information, it's really difficult to determine the best course of action...

Then again, it could be something so stupid and childish that any "retaliation" would be also stupid and childish.

to clear things up a bit, last night when i wrote this i was extremely pissed, so i can understand the lack of sense it made to some, well most people.

i was given a clean box w/ no hdd in it. the box was acceptable for the usage although i recommend a different setup for the fact that this machine was/is going to be the backbone of their business. setup server, misc software for a full and complete remote office setup - everybody coming in through ts/remote apps so all the employees will get is a rdp file and then the software comes in on their desktop as if they were sitting at a workstation local to the machine, but are at home or on the road. 100% tested and all configured and ready to go.

this was a paying setup. i explained to them the whole time where i was and was given lip service. "oh, it won't be a problem", "don't worry about it, we will take care of you". against my better judgement i couldn't get $$ up front but was a referral from a friend and the friend said they were good for it. this hasn't compromised my relationship w/ the friend, fwiw. now that it is complete i was asked when they could get it online and i replied we need to settle up on some stuff. i was basically laughed at w/ them saying it is all done, too bad, what are you going to do about it, it is our box and software.

none of their data has been put on the machine, it is clean as far as their data, just basically a fully configured office server for 100% complete remote offices w/ everything on the actual server automated. they will get all of the software and hardware they bought, i would not think of keeping something they paid for.

like i said they will get all the keys, the misc vendors acct number, phone numbers, email accts and passwords. the software purchased was all distributed via a d/l through ms, symantec and a few other companies - they can re-download it again - i am not keeping anything. i will not retain anything and come out where i started w/ them - at 0. they will on the otherhand have everything they paid for - all the software, just not the setup.

they new this was not a free service from the get go and throughout the setup/testing time i was given a lot of lip service. as a nice gesture on my part i have hosted their website on a server i rent for other sites for the last 6-8mos for free because i have a lot of bandwidth and space on it.

i am not trying to get rich off of this and that was covered, but a laugh and a "what can you do about it, it is already done" after it is fully configured is not payment or any type of settling up imho. thus the reason i was like f*ck it, i will just wipe it, but i still wonder if that is the right thing to do. had their been anything on their end to show gratitude i would not have this desire to wipe it, but i see now that during the setup i was just being told the niceties until it was complete. if i wipe they will need to have somebody else go through the setup. i honestly don't think they should get the whole setup for free when there was an agreed upon resolution.

hope this clears it up for people.

an no, i am not a drama person, i hate drama and i am 30+yrs old, this is not some 12yr old bs. and the company that is f*cking me is making easy 6 figures profit yearly - a small company but they are in the black with no issues in that area.

Take an image of the setup then wipe it. If they decide to actually come through with your compensation you will be able to quickly restore your work with minimal effort. Not sure but it looks as if you may have done some hardware assembly as well. If that is the case disassemble anything you assembled. They are partially correct it is their box and software and I would give it to them that way all neatly packed in their original boxes. If you have anything from them in writing at all outlining the work and any agreed upon compensation for said work I would just hold it all until they paid up but only if you can document the agreed upon work and payment.
