Many cable co's have excessive jitter for quality VOIP connections.

why do you persist in making me think at this late an hour? Love you babe.

My point was upload/bandwidth has little to do with VoIP. Sure jitter may be a problem just as it is with crap CD players. But it isn't related to bandwidth.

The normal online game rwill suffer more in terms or experience more than a voip conversation. The codecs are are well established to deal with "normal" jitter.

I have absolutely nothing bad to report about FIOS after 1 year of usage except that the bastards still have not managed to negotiate TV service in my area - but obviously that's not their fault. FIOS is rock hard stable... my old DSL service would go out intermittenly (spelling nazis can fix that for me) but so far I have had zero/nada/zilch service interruptions from FIOS. Even when the power went out for a couple hours the FIOS equipment was on battery backup (comes standard with installation) and I was on my notebook surfing the web. Great stuff.

Yes and the point is when the user gets upgraded with a higher tier and expects VOIP to work and it sounds like a crappy cell phone it's because their "gizmo" has the jitterbug blues.

Why wait though? I'm sure these folks here can help you get more bandwidth now.

meh, this entire board would be suprised at how little bandwidth is required for voip. (here's the thing, their hard line is 64 kbs TDM channel, voip = even less depending on codec)

I'm with ya babe, buyer beware.

And it sounds crappy. That's putting it NICELY! It's like comparing XM to a 30 ips tape with 75kHz of bandwidth. Of course we have XM that sounds much better than those cheap receivers people use in their motorcars. It's all about DSP. VOIP can sound superb with 64kbps and good DSP - exceeding that of analog POTS but it will cost you. And that is the root of the problem. Everyone wants the WORLD yet nobody wants to PAY for it.

Don't have to tell me about it. I still have my hardline and you can never convince me to give it up. hmm, 100 years of perfected technology vs. "best effort" means I have my tried and true hardline.

Meh, I wish Fios would be rolled out where I live.
Time warner/road runner is pretty much the only thing we have, and the cable goes out regularly during the middle of the day for a few hors every two weeks or so. And I'm paying $110/month for cable internet (that gets relatively slow speeds) and digital cable.

Meh =/

That's just screaming for abuse.

That's speedboost or whatever they are calling it now. Download a large file and after twenty seconds or so you will see your sustained speed drop to 6.6Mbps. It's more of a gimmick so the speed test sites show incredibly inflated numbers - particularly on the downloads.

Your download speed : 4961 kbps or 620.1 KB/sec.

Your upload speed : 1780 kbps or 222.6 KB/sec.

I refuse to get the TV until they get OLN (Verses) I called and the girl said they had it, lol, they don't did my own research.

The ping's used to suck, I don't know why. I would get like 50ns to chicago FIOS while getting 30ns from comcast cable. It seems to have improved, i guess the routing tables worked themselves out.

On SBC/ATT/Whatever for their $28/month elite plan getting a stable 6/768 and really quite happy with it. And with how they keep cutting the price I just keep re-upping for a year at the lower cost. Guessing this should be down to $19.95 by next year some time

besides, i couldn't give a crap about download speeds, anything above 3 or 4 mbps is fine for me, it's the up that i really want from FIOS.

Verizon's FIOS (according to their site, not including any special deals if you have 2 or more verizon services) internet is $35/month for 10/2 and $40/month for digital FIOSTv (which has many more channels than Cablevision). The only disadvantage is the need to get the Digital to standard definition boxes, but that still keeps the cost $10/month less than what they are paying for cable.

Too bad I probably won't be around when/if they switch since I'll be off at school.

Edit: one question, do you have to use Verizon's router for the FIOS internet or can you use your own?

I think you might have to since there is no modem. The cable goes directly into the modem/router/wifi device. Reading through the documentation they strongly frown upon using your own equipment since the provided one has "benefitial utilities" on it.

EDIT: I probably have the SLOWEST FIOS that is offered...the 5 up / 2 down, so don't go bashing FIOS over my results....

on it's own, yes... but when using the phone and with 3 people online, there were issues on both end that I had. It's not the only reason I want a larger upstream though, uploading pictures is painfully slow (I use flickr as an online backup+sharing for the most part).

Actually, I forgot to mention I am more concerned with reliability. I've been stuck w/o comcast for 3 days. And you never know what emergency will happen then. Yeah, I'm a little paranoid, but when we lost power those days... we still had a phone line that worked.

Sure, we all have cell phones, but that's not always at your side (I'm talking about for serious rare emergencies, so my paranoia kicks in. heh)

I already have FIOS internet, however have been considering switching from Dish Network to FIOS for TV. Does anyone here have FIOS with the HD service? Does the local channels (in HD) come over the fiber optics as well, or does it require an OTA HD antenna?

I didn't get the HD channels, since I'm waiting for LCD TV's to drop a little more, but all of the network channels come through the fiber. Pretty much get everything as before when was on Cox. The Program Guide looks very much like DirecTV's guide.

The only problem (for now) is that ONLY the networks and PBS are available w/o a box. I have a PVR and like to record many shows, but havent figured out how the PVR can change the channels on the cable box. Hopefully, when that works it will be awesome with all of the channels.
