Got fired today :(

Just wanted to vent... I came from my last job... same position (more or less) and I got employee of the year, to the first job I've ever been fired from. There is a single reason I can understand on their end, the rest well... whatever.

I guess that if you call in sick, you really should be working. It was one of the reasons I was terminated. I called in sick and couldn't finish a project on time. It was given to me the day before. Ah well... c'est la vie.

Off to job hunting! I'm sure there are bigger and better things on the horizon. Anybody have advice on how to state my position when I'm applying for a new job? Never been in this situation before, so I am really not sure... I think that potential employers will look down at my being fired so... oh well.

Thanks for letting me vent.

Look on the bright side, you can get really hammered tonight and not have to wake up early tommorow.

I don't think you can get unemployment if you're fired.

You sure it wasn't because you took a picture of that guy on a toilet?

On a serious note, you don't sound too troubled. Hopefully you're not in too bad a financial position.

I don't know how it is there in NYC, but here in Chicago we get a swift kick in the ass and are told to go find a damn job.

Sorry about the firing.

Live and learn (I've been there )

Personally, I would be honest with potential future employers and tell the truth, but try to spin it in a good way: "I've learned to say 'no' and not take on too much work." or "I've learned to delegate work in order to achieve timelines" or "I've learned to ask for help instead."

Good luck to you. I hope you find employment with a more understanding manager.

No... I'm not in high school. I went to the doctor, he gave me some OTC meds and I kinda knocked out for that day. I was drowsy all day.

Sure you can. It's a LOT easier trying to get unemployment when getting fired than when voluntarily quitting.

When I was out for a week my work required me to get a doctor's note anyway. It's just a way of proving you were sick and not just calling in to get out of (in your case) that project. Nothing really high schoolish about it.

Being "in high school" has nothing to do with it--in fact, your response is probably the more childish approach. Simply put, jobs pay you to do something, and the doctor note basically explains why you were out and unable to do said job with something greater than a "24hr bug". Same reason you get a log of your time spent in jury duty, for accountability purposes. In many jobs (like my company, which actually is quite liberal with most policies), if you don't show up for 3 days in a row unexplained, they have accepted your implied resignation with no further questions asked.

Wrong attitude to take, especially when you knew about the project given the day before. I know you can't choose when to be ill, but you can do as much damage control as possible.

If you go to the doc, get a note saying you were there and what is wrong. Have the doc put down that he prescribed a few days of bedrest. .... ALWAYS.

It is illegal to fire someone with a doctor's note.

No joke. They are possibly breaking laws there. You can have a doctor write a letter confirming your illness to have your credit stick, especially if they gave you the project a couple of days before. They shouldn't fire you for ~24 hours of work they could've done before or could have given to someone else. I would seriously think about reporting them / pressing charges.

Even the threat of an illegal termination lawsuit should scare your former employer into doing something for you.

I'm just glad I work for a major company that knows its best to let people be at home sick than at work sick.
