Looks like you've gotten lucky! Mind posting a photo of a grey scale gradient. I think I have to see it to belive it.

waldo - to answer your question to JM - yes you would need to use a digital camera and put the image up somewhere public for us to see. no need for flash as the screen should be bright enough (kind of like lunar photography).
Also if you don't mind would you be able to go into the service menu and let us know what settings you have there please? no need to change anything - perhaps take a photo of it as there are menu settings to do with colour.

***The following is a set of instructions on how to access a factory service menu of the Dell 1905FP & 2007WFP. It is possible that you could damage your monitor by changing any of the values in this submenu and potentially void your warranty. If you choose to access this menu, you do so at your own risk. ***

just to recap - to go into the service menu turn the monitor off, hold down the menu button and the + button at the same time and while your doing that turn the monitor back on. Now nothing will happen however the monitor takes a second longer to come on. Once on wait a second and press the - button and the service menu will pop up.

cheers

I'm eager to see this as well. I've had my fingers crossed that the banding problem was due to a bad batch, some settings problem, or was at least subtle enough not to bother me.

The 2007FP is the only reasonably inexpensive 20.1" S-IPS, no? This makes it very appealing to me.

Speaking of which, if the banding problem is not present on waldo's unit then it might be worth confirming that this unit is using the S-IPS panel, since Dell has been known to switch the panel used in a model and since some sources claim two panels have been found in the 2007FP (http://aryarya.net/wassyoi/lcdmemo.html).

The question is, if they do switch panels on the 2007, which panel will they choose?

It seems to be a crapshoot with Dell, great in all areas with the exception of one that brings down the whole unit.

True. The web site I linked implies that Dell has already used (or is already using) two panels in the 2007FP: (1) the 16ms S-IPS LG.Philips LM201U0 and (2) the 16ms S-PVA Samsung LTM201U1.

I don't know how credible this information is, however.

I should mention that the service menu on my 2007WFP states the panel is an LM201W01 and not the LG.Philips LM201WE2 panel as stated in the link your provided (and other reviews).
So either it's the same panel as the 2005FPW or the service menu reports a generic base model number and is not reporting the newer revision.

Thanks for doing this. Can you post the picture of the CheckMON or other gradient test?

Maybe someone else can help get into the settings screen.

Here are two instructions that I found

1) Hold menu and '+' buttons (3rd and 5th buttons from left) while powering on the unit.
2) Press menu button (5th button from left) and select "Factory Reset"
3) Select "Factory" at the bottom of the menu.

or
To enter the service menu, turn the monitor off, hold down the menu button and the + button at the same time, and while you're holding them down, turn the monitor back on. The monitor will take a second longer to come on. Once on, wait a second and then press the - button and the service menu will pop up.

It is the latter that works. I've not tried the former, though.

The + and Menu then power on then release then - works.

Sorry for the late reply - I have been without internet services for a few days (cut cable).

Yes there is a purple hue when viewing outside of the specified viewing angles - definately ips.

Well, I snapped and ordered one (2007fp). I will put it through it's paces and report my findings. After ruling out PVA/MVA (viewing angle washout) for me, this will give me a chance to try out IPS. Likely I will return it for banding issues, because I believe they all have it. Maybe they will actually find a config solution (service menu changes) before I have to send it back.

Anyway this should answer the question if any LCD is doable for me. If I like the panel and only banding stands in my way. If I don't like it anyway, I will know to give up on LCD and start searching for a CRT.

Yep. I was looking at about $400 for an average 21" crt, after missing out on two good used Dell 21" Trinitrons for under $200 coworkers were selling (having moved to LCD). I would have snapped those and been happy.

It was todays Dell deal made me jump. I previously tried the Dell 2405 and aside from very poor viewing angles and input lag, I found the display very hard on the eyes in just minutes I could feel the eye strain. This is from someone with almost 20 years of 10 hour days on CRT with zero eye strain. I never felt anything in my eyes like that before. I quickly got rid of it.

This time I will keep it for two weeks regardless to see if I can adapt. If I can't, then no LCD for me. I will test everything imaginable on the banding side while I have it. Along with viewing angles and lags,etc...

I can say without reservation. I would much rather have a nice new 21" trinitron for that price if I could find one. But one more shot at LCD before I give up.

Well I think I am going to cancel my order for the 2007fp. Someone had a new one that had very little banding, but when they checked the Panel they got:
SMS LTM201U1.

I absolutely don't want an PVA panel. I give up on LCD. Oh and the PVA version was blurry.

Hmm, that's bad news. I still can't decide whether to take a chance and order one, and return it if unsatisfactory. There is a lack of IPS alternatives at a reasonable price point.

When I did a recent search for fast-ish IPS models in 4:3 pixel configurations I found these new models: 19" BenQ FP91R, 20" BENQ FP2092, and 20" LG M2040A. They seem to be coming available in Europe and Australia right now, so I hope they hit North America soon enough. They may not have Dell prices but hopefully they won't have Dell color banding.

Just got two 2007FP's today. They are both SAM UXGA LTM201U1 made in China.

Coming from 19/21" Trinitron CRT's this is my first big screen LCD. Not sure I've ever seen an IPS panel but this PVA panel is typical of what I see on laptops and 15" LCD's I've used.

The 2007FP's came from the $599 deal with the Dimension 5150. For $60 over the $539 price of the 2007FP I got a computer.

Not sure what I am going to do as far as keeping the 2007FP's or send them back. Is it worth the hassle? Is there a better 20" 1600x1200 non-widescreen LCD?

If you got them as part of a system. You will get next to nothing if you return them without the system. I would test them. First report I had on the PVA version was blurring and slight banding, exactly like the reports of the new 2407s that are coming out of japan.

Once I checked to cancel, mine was already listed as shipped so I didn't bother to cancel. I will check it out and decide what to do. If otherwise perfect I may keep it even though I dislike PVA because I don't want to pay a restock fee and now there is no inexpensive good 4:3 IPS options anyway. Color shifts with view angle may be less agravating on a narrower screen than it was on my Dell 2405.

If I find anything remotely like a defect, back it goes and I am done with LCD for some time. They are just not ready for me yet. I am not willing to keep wasting my time/money trying to find a good one.

Well I got mine, and I definitely don't like it.

I had heard the LG paneled 2007fp had banding issues just like the 2007fp, well it turns out so do 2007fp Samsung panels.

Plus the Panel has extensive tone shift at angular view (PVA). I may look into a Dell if they ever get around to fixing this. I suspect another version of the monitor will be necessary.

Hard to photograph, but this shot is representative. This is perfectly smooth on my CRT, RGB input to the Dell improves it a bit but not by as much as I would have thought.

This shot was done in RAW mode, and converted to TIFF then saved as PNG. So no lossy compression was used anywhere producing the image. This is essentially what I see when looking at a gradient.

source for image: This should be a nice smooth transition without bands.
