Sorry, I must have missed it... who here argued that DUI doesn't kill?
My argument is that the enforcement of the law in this case was excessive and selective, which has the effect of diluting the strength of the law.
And keep in mind, while drunk driving is a problem, less than half of all traffic fatalities are alcohol-related, and those that are not alcohol-related are rarely 'accidents,' but the direct result of someone's negligence. IOW, the same people who would wish the death penalty on the guy sleeping it off in his car are probably the same ones who think nothing of texting while driving, even though studies have proven conclusively that the level of impairment is the same.
edit: and don't even get me started on the large number of people on the road whose driving ability/skill even while sober is scarcely better than a drunk to begin with.
QFT DUI law is one people want out of fear and not applied to themselves.
I got caught up in a DUI by an ex-g/f having some cop buddy wait for me at our apartment (we were breaking up the next day, I had left to give her time to herself).
I had a fucking beer tab for 4 to 6 beers from about 6pm to 2am when I was stopped.
They said I blew a .168.
I just paid the fucking thing out, $6,000. Never had any issues with insurance or credit, however; most cannot just pay it out and most become unemployed since they can't drive for 3 months.
