you do though get more from a 20.1" viewable lcd (2001fp) compared to a 2005fpw..But I want to know how the 2005fpw holds up to movies..I mean games are cool, but if you play competively like I did you are crt. And if you play for fun, well there aren't really that many fun singleplayer pc games out right now other than hl2...hrm speaking of hl2 if your screen's viewable area is 17.1" wide and 10." high it must be distorted? since its not exactly 16" wide..

Yes, the 2005 has less viewable screen space than the 2001fp. But WS has it's advantages.

I play a lot more games than HL2 and they all support WS, natively, or with a quick registry change.

HL2
Far Cry
UT2K4
Splinter Cell Pandora..
Rise of Nations
Rome Total War
Generals

And they all run very well.

Having the ability to have 2 windows side by side is something my 21" CRT could not do.

oh man i forgot to mention pluses for the 2005fpw..looking at the specs brightness wise, it dominates the 2001fp. higher contrast ratio and better nits...damn it theres always in my way I'm just a broke college kid who came across a large sum of money from doom3 ..and i want to watch movies/do 3d work. I'm looking at the 17" wide lcds solely because they have component and I guess component utilizes the whole screen even if the screen is 16:10 and the movie is 16:9...maybe i should wait.

Actually, even games that natively support widescreen resolutions will distort the picture in some way. Every single game that I've seen so far has either done linear stretching, panoramic stretching, or clipping to fit the picture onto the screen. Then you have the fact that for a given diagonal, the closer the screen is to square, the more surface area you'll get. And of course most web pages are designed for 4:3/5:4 resolutions, which in many cases results in ugly browsing. It's also worth noting that not only is it quite possible to put two windows side by side on a 4:3 screen, doing so is rarely necessary unless you are actually able to read two things at once.

Pretty long list of disadvantages, isn't it? Well, I'll now start to argue against them, if you don't mind. Lots of people don't notice picture distortion or clipping in games.. the former is easy enough to get used to if you're not big on picture quality, and most people don't use the extreme top and bottom of their screens often enough to care about cropping. The surface area advantage of widescreens isn't that big of a deal, and they're close enough to begin with. There are conceivable scenarios in which one would want to put two unusually wide documents side by side to compare them.

I'll also say that I love widescreen monitors for DVDs, for obvious reasons. Just saying that 4:3 screens are in fact generally better for games, but how much better they are will vary from person to person.

$799
-$199 (25% Delf)
-$150 (AMEX stackable)

$450 shipped hehe

Pardon the noob question but what does "Stackable" mean? And how did you pull off that sweet deal on the Dell 2001FP?

Many Thanks!

yeah exactly I want it mainly for movies and of course it seems good enough for photoshop etc..I only wish it had component, somebody mention earlier that component would utilize the full screen..there is though a 19" lcd/tv that incorporates a component-in. But of course it cost about $100 more than the 2005fpw, damn.

my state of mind right now...I'm gonna hold off and wait for a deal like the above mentioned sub 600 deal straight from dell. My reason is this, I've been reading a lot into this monitor and it seems lately that a lot of the 2005fpw's carry backlighting probs, dead pixels here n there. So im totally against buying one from ebay...If I'm this monitor, its through dell, if theres backlighting damn straight I'm gonna return it :>

Damn it.

The backlight for some odd reasons seems multiple times worse now. And on a different side of the screen.

I also have 5 frozen/dead pixels. I was going to keep it with the dead pixels because it was not that bad.

Now I am on hold with Dell.

Pics added at the top.

yeah dude, my point exactly. Theres a crazy thread where a lot of peeps had backlighting probs...dont get your hopes up on the thats gonna replace heard those have probs too...Weird thing is that people who got the monitor early, im guessing before dec to nov have no problems, BUT everyone who just recently bought one is having a prob..Quick question, are you going through the warranty on the replacement? I'm asking because I want one now, but ebay is my best bargain..

I knew about the backlight issue before I purchased. And im positive there are quite a few people with good monitors.

I am pretty confident I will receive a good one.. Jan 05. maybe we will get revA01 or something newer.

Mine's in production right now. I'm looking at middle of next week in receiving it. I'll hook it up and see how it goes. If it's screwed up, back to Dell it goes. Hoping for the best because they must sell a lot of them and not "all" of the customers are complaining. Maybe I'll be one of the fortunate ones...

Hopefully you are. Because I definitely don't want to get on the phone again for 2 hours trying to get a replacement.Went through 3 reps just to speak to SOMEONE who get replace the unit. The guy I spoke with was just unbelievable. He DID NOT know what dead pixels were, he was unaware of the backlight issue completely. No concept at all. Should not have been in the tech area.. Makes NewEGG look GODLIKE. A return or replacement should not be that difficult or time consuming.

Dell service -

Dell products -

Finally he said ok I will send you a replacement. After going back and forth for a few minutes he assured me it woould be new in a box.

I will probably receive mine the same time as you.

Good Luck!

I got my 2005 and it has backlight issues, and contrast issues, or maybe the bad contrast is due to the blacklight problem...

The black on mine is more like "muddy gray". Is this due to the backlight issue? Doom 3 is not nearly as dark as my NEC 19" CRT. I really like this monitor but the contrast sucks. It's just way to bright in areas of games that are supposed to be dark.

Aloha bjc112. I hope that you are not still on the phone with Dell. Let us know how you did with the replacement LCD. I am keeping my fingers crossed for you.

I really like these new Dell LCD monitors from all the hype I've read on the Internet (especially in Anandtech). I just hope that all the wrangling and tangling that Dell is going through with customer dissatisfaction about this monitor will finally put the grease to the squeaky wheel, so to speak. There is a lot of talk about revisions and hopefully that is not just bull but real solutions to the issues at hand.

All the best.

I found my coupon on the Hot Deals forum. I thought that it was a no no (actually it is) to post coupon codes but I found a few hundred listed on one of the threads. I took a shot and one actually worked! Got my 25% off and I was happy!

I don't think any are valid at the moment. Do a google search or find some on eBay if you are really looking for a deal.

Good luck.

Aloha..

I was hoping to receive it tomorrow, but I doubt that will happen. Either way Dell said it would not update my order on the site, a new one would just come. :Q

Well I finally got rid of the Logitech Beige and got the Apple keyboard..

I'm moving up a the chain.

As for the movie, I think for some reason I used "THe Hours" ( which I haven't seen ). Bad choice to show off colors..

Backlighting like the pics you have shown above are common with just about any LCD..though room lighting , media and even your sitting position can play into it. Your pics were severe but every now and again when everything is just right I see a little backlighting in the corner of my 2001FP.

Perhaps there were some defective monitors but id wager that the vast majority of them are from overly sensitive owners picking out the natural backlighting that is common with all LCDs.

Of course your going to see backlighting well in a dark room with a dark screen with a white stripe across the center of the screen ...that is pretty much a perfect recipe for seeing backlight leakage the easiest.

Adjust your room lighting , viewing angle , contrast and brightness to minimize seeing any backlight leakage. The leakage on my 2001FP seems to mostly come from the lower right hand corner...with some adjusting I pretty much never see it.
