The scores actually went up now to 31 fps (with the new ATI driver), and yes as others have pointed out I'm using Vista. Also, you have a Q6600 which is apparently supposed to help isn't it (atleast in the full version of the game??)? Are you using the full version or the demo?

I am using the demo. I am saying as far as I know High quality settings on XP and Vista are identical (unless someone can testify otherwise?) Therefore the only difference is the OS.

You're getting a pretty good score because even in DX9 and 1280x1024, these tests barely go above 30fps at high settings for the GT which is faster than the GTS.

I think it might have to do with Vista cause the Vista scores from reviews seem to be lower.

thilan29, guru states:

I used the GPU benchmark built-in demo as opposed to a manual run through and FRAPS. This would explain it.

Looks like Vista is significantly slower in High Quality Mode. 8800GTX is 15% slower at 1600x1200 - XP vs. Vista

Oops didn't see that. I'm gonna try to find a test that does both DX9 and DX10 for Crysis (EDIT: Couldn't find one from a reputable site...someone please link if you can).

CS:S stress test results added.

Why are you benchmarking with 16xAF i mean surely that is killing performance in Crysis.

Can you run crysis @1680x1050 @ Very high without AA and AF enabled and let me know what it runs like please mate.

Mandelbrot (855/1350)
SM3 = 25.5 SM2= 13.10 FBO = 14.70 CPU = 2.88

Did you ran Mandrelbrot at default? If that's true, is quite a low score.

I scored the following with my lowly X1950XT:

SM3.0=30.64 SM2.0=17.80 FBO= 13.78 CPU= 3.78

And I forgot to disable HQ AF in the CCC, don't know if that affects somehow the score.

Added 1680x1050. There is a fairly large performance hit with AF (which is very disappointing) but that at least should be a minimum...more than AA (for me anyway). AA just makes it even more unplayable.

I'm not sure why but 1600x1200 runs faster than 1680x1050...1600 should run slower since it's rendering more pixels??

Preliminary OCing using CCC yields 855MHz core and 1350MHz (2700MHz) (!!!) memory. I'll post some game results later cause I don't have much time right now. Unfortunately Rivatuner 2.06 nor AMDGPUClock tool work with the card. It isn't even recognized as a 3870...just as RV670.

EDIT: Memory at 1350MHz started artifacting in Crysis demo so backed down to 1300MHz.

Oh and I can't control the fan speed in CCC...how do ya'll 2900 owners do it?

The card feels much lighter than my previous 8800GTS 640 I had...probably because the cooler doesn't cover a whole lot of area...and the fan shroud doesn't even cover all the memory heatsinks.

Any requests for testing?

TESTING RESULTS (only in Vista) (using drivers on CD (8.43 package))

Lol, no need to quote EVERYTHING!!!

I bought from NCIX, not from Diamond. I got it the day after I ordered...I'm in Canada though.

Wow, so performance on the 3870 hd is identical with very high settings and high settings with the hotfix? I suppose it would be fair to assume that they will boost the dx9 performance aswell then?

Got my New HIS 3870... Do I qualify to post here?
Ordered from NCIX, and my friend and I ( we ordered 3) also didn't receive the Steam offer, etc. That I thought we were supposed to get (Black Box I think)

As Both Diamond and HIS are Ref cards: I think performance numbers should be similar. Now I had to sell off my C2D box, and replace with a Jumped up X2 (Bad month had to make rent)... But I spent the afternoon (while watching Kevin Glen Break his Arm, and The Bombers Advance ) Going after 10k in 3dmark.

X2-3600 @ 2.85
Biostar Tforce 7050
2 x Crucial Ballistix PC2-8500 @ 950 5-5-5
1 x HIS 3870 (840 core 2480 mem)

9844 3dmarks (3dmark 06 Default (1280x1024) )
SM2.0 4365
HDR/SM3.0 4821
CPU Score 2176

Gives you a bit of an idea about lower end system performance.
Also, have to praise this $70 Biostar Board, and $65 AMD chip for letting me OC it like I have.
When I tossed this together like 4 or 5 months ago, it was ~$220 from NCIX for Board, Chip, and 2 x 1gb Patriot PC5300 ram... Not bad at all. (for us broke peeps)

Edit: I should mention... this is def not a clean install of XP32, and I've killed services that were extraneous, but may not have gotten them all, etc etc.)

Wait so a DECREASE in the amount of pixels rendered equals a 33% decrease in performance?!

Perhaps geometry considerations (in the realm of driver optimizations). I've seen in the past strange results at certain resolutions.. ie: higher or same results for a higher rez vs a lower rez. Especially with newly released cards (a la x1800/x1900).
I think key with these cards, is there more general purpose processing engines vs nVidia... It gives us some strange results when comparing pro level cards and apps with r600 vs nvidia... Much like initial introduction of ring bus architecture... seems driver optimizations are required for everything! else goes on a weird hardly efficient type code path or some such.

For those with Diamond cards.... noticing the card is eerily silent no matter the temp? AS if there is an issue with fan speed scaling? I've not had the card make anything more then a whisper unless right at boot.

that is by design. that is the reason that the card runs at about the same temp as 8800gt. amd decided that they wanted a whisper quiet card instead of a turbofan like 2900xt. It's funny, nvidia and amd have traded places in noise/thermals this update cycle. 55nm seems to be helping amd out a ton. I believe that anand mentioned that some amd folks told him that they were in fact using first silicon...about time amd had something go right

Yeah, I figured that. I just wanted to see if anyone had pushed it hot enuf to scale up in fan speed. It could be why we seem to have a hard lock on overclocking it... I bet once we get some better tools to play with it, we should be able to oc these even faster. If we bump fan speed to 100%, and figure a way around he seeming hard lock on ocing.. this thing should go past 900 and beyond...

AS it is, 850core 2600mem is easy to hit... But then again Ia m up around 90c too.

you should use RT to manually increase your fan speed to 40-50% right now with that oc imho. that will keep your temps in line, too. From what I've seen/heard, there seems to be a hard lock in the 850-860 core range. Someone (maybe taltamir?) mentioned that he got around a similar lock on an older card by going 30+ mhz over the "locked" number, so say up fan to 100% and shoot for 890-900. Um, just don't blame me if it catches on fire...

you had to ask for the black box offer while you were ordering the card from ncix. call them and see if they'll let you have it still. did you oc your card to get the 3dmark up or did you leave it at stock and just oc the cpu? Very nice oc on that cpu at 2.94, btw.

I tried with RT to bump it up... couldn't seem to do much, didn't ID the card. ( was already trying do you know if an update hit or something for RT? If so, where can I find it? Can't seem to keep it stable at 850... I am sure it's heat tho... Just have to bump the fan up.

Edit: Ha never mind, got it. Much better!

Ad yes, I've seen bumping past by a certain gap gets around those locks... It stops the auto OC feature from potentially wrecking a card, and he customer from pursuing liability claims... So that if you are going past x speed, you'd hopefully have a good idea of what your doing, buttresses the "it's not our fault" argument.

it is either a feature or a bug in this first batch of 3870&3850.

as far as i can see, it should be a bug in the bios.

the fan never speeds up as the temperature rises.

HIS 3870

RivaTuner 2.06 shows:

lookup entry 0 60 C 30% duty cycle
lookup entry 1 65 C 40% duty cycle
lookup entry 2 70 C 50% duty cycle
lookup entry 3 75 C 60% duty cycle
lookup entry 4 80 C 70% duty cycle
lookup entry 5 85 C 80% duty cycle
lookup entry 6 90 C 89% duty cycle
lookup entry 7 98 C 100% duty cycle

So far, the fan always runs at 30%, regardless the temperature(my best guess). someone said it is 35%.. No idea....

Use GPU Caps Viewer to run OpenGL Fur, the temperature raises from 54 C to 94 C
no change at all in noise level for the fan.....

I wanted 10k.. Especially considering I build my friends with money much faster systems then I have... So When my friend texts me saying he's near on 18k with the C2Q @ 3.6 I built for him (he got the other 2 3870s) I had to push for 10k with my cheap-o X2.

My system runs 24/7 @ 2.85, and i hadn't bothered putting the ballistix in i've had sitting on my desk since the last NCIX surprise sale on it (was running pc-5300 patriot at some low mem freq). But with the 3870 stock, I hit ~9400 (avg over 2 runs)... So I couldn't let it rest there

So dropped the Ballistix in, bumped ram up to 990 (eventually got there forgot to drop command rate to 2t), and pushed cpu up to 2.94 ( upped vcore, vdimm, and Vnb some). But frankly, I bet I could push farther cpu wise, it's the mobo that worries me. I've heard 320 on it, I'm at 310... and 300 was stable for months now 24/7. Card was pushed up previously to 840 core, and 24xx mem... so went to 2600...

Not a huge gain for All that work.. sigh

Essential:

3D Mark06--- 9400 - 10120

CPU----------- 2.85ghz - 2.94ghz
Mem---------- ddr2-500ish - ddr2-990
Vidcore------- stock - 840
VidMem------ stock - 2600

@kkk60091:

Exactly... I've read is a bug in bios... So I've just now forced it up to play above 840... that being said for 3dmark 06 runs, even at ~30% fans it completes and runs fine at 840/2600. Just gets HOT.

Just FYI bumping to 70ish (fan speed in %) the temp when testing an OC (855/2600) dropped by 30 plus degrees.
