I have the Mazda3 S Grand Touring sedan with MT. The car handles great and is very zippy in town and on the freeway. The 2.3L 160 hp MZR engine is really good (now it's being used by many other cars, such as the Fusion). It also looks great IMO

Oh, what happen to your Saab 9-3? Or do you go around and trash everyone's car purchase?

I have both (saab and mazda). The Mazda3 is the GT version with leather, heated seats, xenon, 17" wheels, auto climate, bose, sunroof, etc......

And according to Edmunds.com the TSX 0-60 is 8.5 seconds with the MANUAL transmission (Mazda3 S w/MT is 7.5 sec)

The TSX actually has a better power to weight ratio than the 3 GT.

magazine racing FTL.

I don't think they've done any performance tests on the 2006 TSX which has 15 more hp (pre SAE revisions).

Honestly, I think that edmunds article is a typo. Seems to me they listed AT numbers for the MT.

yeah, I guess I'll be eating my hat now

6.6 sec is really quite good, and that slick 6-speed manual must be great too

Not all driver are created equally.. I seen some track time for 6mt at 8+.

Numbers are foggy for 2006 since they dont really do a in depth review again..

The voice activated nav/radio/hvac is super sweet.
Still getting used to saying the keywords and getting it to understand my voice.

First mod was to swap out the rather ugly stock wheels (aftermarket wheels are on in the pics).
Next mod will be 35% tint all around, and the A-spec suspension for a mild 1" drop.

Better park that puppy AWAY from other cars, lest you get a door scratch from that fat mom and overweight kids who swing open their mini-van/SUV doors indiscriminately. If you don't, you'll be kicking and screaming one day.....trust me, I know this from repeated experience!

Edmund's has the most conservative performance numbers either because they don't rev and dump the clutch (or brake torque), or because their drivers suck.

Congrats psteng--I am looking at getting the exact same car with the same options!! The TSX really looks sharp with the black exterior, but I'd probably get the charcoal or silver just because black is a pain to keep clean. Still, 6-speed is a must and I'd really like to have the nav.

I've also been looking at the TL, IS300 / IS250, G35, 325i, Altima SE-R, Legacy GT, and Jetta TDI (44-54 mpg!!) but the TSX (despite being one of the weakest in terms of performance) keeps coming out on or near the top of the list. It may be "overpriced" in terms of straight-line acceleration, but the TSX is very capable in the twisties and comes so loaded that the ONLY option available on the car is navigation. Much like Infiniti, everything else is standard.

Like you, good gas mileage is near the top of my list of requirements. But I like to go fast and it will be tough going from a 350+ HP car to a 200 HP car...I'm just hoping if I decide on the TSX that it'll have enough toys onboard to keep me happy. If I just can't get over it though, the G35 has 298 HP and power all over the tach...but I certainly won't be able to expect to achieve the TSX's gas mileage.

Again, congrats!!

200hp is plenty powerful enough to go fast in most places...

Agreed, but it would be a huge adjustment to go from 350HP to 200HP. The TSX is a really nice car, but I still don't like the thought of getting smoked by the V6 Accord or soccer-mom SUV next to me...

edit (Which is why I should probably wait a bit longer and get the TL or G35, that way I'll still have a fully-equipped car that can hold its own against most cars on the road )

Thanks.
The 6 speed manual coupled with the smooth revving K24 is an absolute blast.
I am enjoying rowing through the gears in this puppy. Just can't wait until 1000 miles, so I can finally take it over 3500 rpm.

If you're coming from a high power, fast car, you might be a little disappointed with the TSX.
On the AZ forums, a couple of guys traded in for TL's, STi's, EVO's, etc.
If you can wait another year, might I suggest the new G35 (or G37).
Not sure if they will be using direct injection or not, but if they do, it helps with the gas mileage a bit.
And hopefully they offer a manual, unlike the IS350.

What 350hp car are you coming from btw?

I drive a 94 Mustang GT. Fairly well modded but still naturally aspirated. Obviously the TSX would be more refined and practical, but the GT is a hell of a lot of fun...it just doesn't have nearly as many creature comforts, and it blows when there is more than a light dusting of snow on the road. :mad;

I wouldn't mind waiting for the new G35, but I doubt it'll be in my $25-30k price range. The only problem with a G35 is that I'd want the coupe and you can't get those in AWD like you can the sedan. So even with a G35 coupe, I'd still be stuck when winter comes. I first wanted an STi but if you want heated leather seats and navigation, you're out of luck. I dunno, I guess I'll just have to go drive some of the cars on my list and see what fits.

You also can't get the G35x in stick (at least not in this generation).

As others have mentioned in this thread, it sounds like the Subaru Legacy GT is a candidate for you. A mix of practicality, sport and speed, with a touch of luxury.

As an update to the gas mileage issue, I'm getting about 29 mpg according to the display in about 80% highway. About 250 miles on my baby so far.

I got a '95 Mustang GT myself! What mods did you do to (or have done/bought it with) to get over 350 HP NA?

I know...and unfortunately that means that you have to get the 280HP version of the 3.5 instead of the 298HP version. Not a huge difference as in the RX-8 though, and I'm sure the benefits of the AWD would make up for the relatively minor drop in HP.

The Legacy GT is fairly high on my list because the 2.5 GT Limited is much more well equipped than the STi, yet with a couple thousand bucks you can surpass STi levels of power and have a killer sleeper. I'll be honest though, the 2 Subarus are (IMHO) among the ugliest cars on my list. After thinking about it, there are only several days a year where I'd really need AWD rather than FWD to get somewhere (and for those occasions I can use the GF's Xterra). However, I realize that even for rainy conditions AWD provides superior traction and grip.

I also considered the 325i or A4, but possible reliability problems scare me away from those and to get them as well equipped as a "base" Acura or Infiniti will cost several thousand more dollars. Same thing with the IS250.

The HUD in the TSX is really cool. I like how it can inform you of an incoming call and even display the caller ID info right between the gauges! It would also be neat to just say "Call xxxx" out loud, have the car dial a number for you, and then talk to them through audio system! It has some neat gadgets to be sure, and from what I've read the `06 holds several improvements over the 04/05 models.
