Purchased an '02 maxima through financing and had to get full coverage insurance. Quoted at $230 (cad) and I get a call from my company saying its gonna be $420 cause I've only had my G license for a year instead of 6 (which the dumbass CSR screwed up). They called me and gave me the bad news and I told them that the only reason I purchased the car was because of the low quote. They told me there was nothing they could do and if I cancelled with them I would have to pay a cancellation fee (as well as first and last for the next insurance company I decide to go with) They said they have 60 days to review the policy and make any changes. If they have 60 days to make any changes, by law, shouldn't I have 60 days also to review changes and switch if unsatisfied. This is really pissing me off, and I was tempted to go back to driving without insurance again (photoshop is your friend ). But all in all, I turn 25 in 8 months so I decided that I can afford it until then (which will go down to around $200) Anyone ever been in a similar situation?

wow, that sucks. I've always gotten a solid quote from insurance before buying though......

it's talked me out of getting a faster car more than once

The way they screwed me is like this... They asked me over the phone, how long have I have my G license (full) I told them I didn't know exactly, and then I HAD to fill out some bullshit application and I put since 2004. I asked them over the phone, If I would have put a different year, could they verify it. They said NO. So basically I screwed myself. The only thing is, if I was caught lying then if I ever made a claim I COULD be denied. I am still kicking myself in the ass for not lying. Oh well. I got away with 6 years of non-insurance, I guess I'm not gonna push it anymore ... (total savings based on my bad driving record=$4000 a year x 6 years = $24k) I realize though that with a newer car, insurance would be mandatory so I am not gonna risk anymore.

Honestly, normally I would jump on the bandwagon of "you're a bad person for not having insurance before" but the insurance quote bait and switch seems to be VERY common. My GF did this (with a reptuable carrier) and came home bragging how her insurance was only $120 a month compared to the $250-300 I told her I thought it would be. Sure enough, after she gives them the VIN # etc of the new car she just bought "oh, your monthly bill will be $275..."

Its bullsh!t.... They are scam artists..... I understand having insurance when getting into an accident but they are taking this WAY to far and something needs to be done. I understand with having high insurance rates.... But when the insurance rates themselves are higher than your automobile payments then there is deinately a problem.

So don't drive, you aren't entitled to a car, insurance or anything else in life, you are throwing a temper trantrum like a child.

Let me reiterate my point. YOU AREN'T ENTITLED TO ANYTHING. Personally I think you should be in jail for driving without insurance for years, either that or have your drivers license revoked for life. Stupid child.

I have the same rightsd as anyone else does. I'm not bithing. I got away with what I did, and I'm smart enough to realize when to call it quits. But I beleive that everyone should be treated equally, at the very least when it comes to car insurace. Women cause more accidents than men do yet they still pay a smaller premium. Well, whatever makes you happy. I don't care, I make enough money to pay the high rate., but don't call me a child. I've went through enough bullcrap in my life to try to protect my rights. Although some of the things I've done in my past were bad. Still, it's a gamble. Driving with no insurance for 6 years has made me a better driver.. I ALWAYS let people in, I ALWAYS give others the benfefit of a doubt, and I personally think that by doing this, it has made me a better driver. Think about it, I had more to loose than anyone else on the road, so I was more careful, and obeyed the laws more thouroughly. I do admit what I did was against the law, but really the only people I was screwing was the insurance companies, not the government or other people so I don't feel bad at all.

Good day to you sir.

If they really pulled a "bait and switch" I would call my state's department of insurance and report it. If you just made a mistake on the application and they caught it I'd think you are out of luck.

I'm sure if you really want out of this insurance policy without paying cancellation fees you can do so just by arguing with the insurance company for an hour or two. Just ask to speak to "your manager" every time they turn you down.

I'd be more worried about bait and switch with the car loan interest rate. It isn't uncommon for the dealer to promise you a low interest rate, let you drive off with the car, sell your trade in, and then call you a week later saying that the financing company needs to bump you up a few interest points if you want to keep the car.
