For any of those who are interested in my opinions of this board, the Foxconn Winfast NF4 Ultra PCI-E S939 Mobo, please read on!

The following is my setup:

Foxconn Winfast NF4UK8AA-EKRS mobo
Newcastle A64 3500+
1 Gig (512 x2) PC-3200 Patriot XBL
eVGA GeForce 6800GT PCI-E
Seagate 7200.8 200Gig SATA II harddisk
Enermax Noisetaker EG495AX-VE SFMA PSU ATX 12V v. 2.0
Chaintech AV-710
In-Win 7in1 card reader in 3.5" bay
Antec 3700 BQE case (not using the stock PSU, obviously)
Arctic Cooling Silencer 64 Ultra 90mm heatsink/fan, using Arctic Silver 5

Everything is at stock speed.

RAM set to 2-2-2-7 1T

Impressions of motherboard:

Excellent build quality. My video card runs right over the chipset cooler, but otherwise does not interfere with the SATA cable. The chipset cooler is on the loud end, but certainly not louder than my video card fan (the loudest thing in the system). Everything hooked up rather quickly, and the system booted on the first try.

Idle CPU temp is 30 degrees C, load under Prime95 (max heat torture test) appears to be 42 degrees C. These are the BIOS temp readings, using the included "Super Step" monitoring program. Case temp gets as high as 39 degrees C according to the monitoring program.

One interesting thing about this board is that the serial port CANNOT be disabled at all. Usually one thing I do is disable all legacy devices, but this is not something that can be turned off. I did disable the parallel port and secondary Parallel ATA channel in an effort to conserve IRQ usage as much as possible.

The BIOS allows moderate tweaking of the RAM timings (the usual, including the command rate). I cannot speak to the overclocking ability as I do not overclock, but there appears to be some options in the BIOS for it (although many review sites have pointed out that this board simply does not overclock well).

When everything was all said and done, the only two devices sharing an IRQ in my system under WinXP Pro were the on-board Agere firewire and my Chaintech AV-710. Since I do not really use the firewire, this is not likely to present an issue, and I am considering disabling it anyway.

I am having one issue, but am unsure if it will affect real-world stability. I can run Prime95 for hours and hours on end and it will not experience an error. If I attempt and run 3DMark05 concurrently, then eventually about half-way through the benchmark Prime95 will halt due to an error. I can run 3DMark without Prime95 running in the background and it will work fine. I am still trying to track down what this could be--but otherwise have not experienced any stability issues beyond this. It simply causes one or the other to terminate, but WinXP does not crash (ie catastrophic). Anyone have any idea on this one, or should I simply accept it and move on?

A note on the nVidia 6.39 chipset drivers--I get an immediate BSOD if I attempt to load the Forceware Network Access Manager. I can use the plain ethernet driver in the pack and have no issues, but the second I try and use Active Armor or anything beyond the basic driver, IMMEDIATE BSOD. I understand this is a driver issue, and not a motherboard issue (or at least there is some degree of interaction depending upon the brand as others seem to be doing OK, but many are having the same problems across a great spectrum of nF4 boards).

NCQ. I am using the NCQ ability of the chipset and Seagate drive. FAST. QUIET. I mean it. No problems with NCQ.

One thing to watch out for is to make sure you install XP before you hookup any USB based mass storage devices otherwise XP will fubar the driver letter assignments. I initially ended up with my Seagate as drive H. Not a big deal, but caused me enough consternation that I unplugged the InWin Reader and reinstalled!

Otherwise, this build went smoothly. I like the board. Besides the one stability issue under extreme stress and the flakey nVidia Active Armor utility/driver, everything is going well.

Hi. Not counting the LG LCD display/Saitek Gamers Keyboard/Logitech MX-310 optical mouse I already had...about $1,000 on the nose.

Forgot to include in the original post that I have a NEC 3520A DVD burner as well.

You may want to try the BIOS available at www.ocworkbench.com. It fixes the overclocking issues and may also fix your stability problem.

Thanks! I just flashed to it. I also just completely reloaded the machine using the latest 6.53 nForce driver as well. I did not attempt to load the Active Armor--I am just using the driver from the set, but no Forceware Network Access Manager. I will test with the new BIOS/drivers. BTW--the new BIOS has more memory tweaking options now, and Cool 'n Quiet control. Seems to be a much more thought-out BIOS.

My new board came on Monday. Wow, what build quality. And the price is unbelieveable. I think you and I made a good choice. This company has been around for a long time. No one knows this but it is the second largest mobod manufacturer in the world. Hopefully you never have to call their tech dept. but if you do you will find you get through quickly and they know what they are talking about. I am pretty sure that within the next 2 years you will be hearing a lot about them.

Go into the forums, and select Other Motherboards. There is a sticky for the BIOS link. You can use the Super Utility to do the upgrade right in Windows.

My recommendations with this motherboard, having used it for three days now and have worked through a few issues are:

1. Upgrade to the latest BIOS now.
2. Use the 6.39 drivers, not the 6.53. The 6.53 drivers caused weird boot issues where about 1 time out of 5 I would not be able to boot into Windows. Sometimes the machine would hang on reboot as well. Reverted to 6.39 and the problems disappeared.
3. Do not use NAM.
4. If you are using a power hungry video card like me (6800GT), plug in a molex connector into the AUX PCI-E power port on the rear edge of the motherboard. This solved a few stability issues when I was putting the system through extreme stress testing. You would think that a 24pin ATX 2.0 PSU and the extra PCI-E video card connector would be enough power, but it is NOT. You must use that AUX connector for the big bad video cards.

Follow this advice and you will end up with a rock stable system.

So you are saying upgrade to the latest from ocworkbench or from foxconn? Do not use NAM, not sure what you mean here?

The new bios (dated 3/30) is on Foxconn's site now. I just flashed mine and had a look around - it does allow for cpu multiplier adjustments, although it's oddly named "Hammer FID Control" . I haven't tried overclocking yet as I'm a lazy bastard.

I also experienced problems with bsod on startup (irq not equal or less) with the 6.53 and the 12/21 bios. Just using the ethernet driver and no firewall fixed it for me.

My bios reports a low 12v - around 11.5 on a Tagan 480w. I haven't had any stability problems though. Just for kicks I took the power supply out of my other system (Antec 350w) and it reported it's 12v at 11.3, whereas the Asus pc probe said it was 12.3. Whatever.

Also, the last time I did a Windows update, there was an entry under "hardware" entitled SCM Microsystems DFU adapter - I didn't know what that was, and I still don't, but after installing it, my memory card reader (Hardcano 13), which hooks up to a usb header on the motherboard, no longer worked. In fact, it completely disappeared from My Computer. Uninstalling this "DFU adapter" resolved the issue

I wonder if it is in the family of the benq? I have had problems with the benq dw1620 pro oem. It would cause problems with my start up and different things. I uninstalled the dvd drive and no longer have any problems. Try unistalling the drive and see if the nvidia drivers work with it. If not you can always roll it back.
