Seems this year is a lot worse that previous ones.

The city was experiencing its worst flu season since at least 2009, Menino said, with about 700 confirmed cases of the flu, compared with 70 all of last season.

Massachusetts was one of 29 states reporting high levels of ‘‘influenza-like illness,’’ according to the most recent weekly flu advisory issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC said the proportion of people visiting health care providers with flu-like symptoms climbed from 2.8 percent to 5.6 percent in four weeks. By contrast, the rate peaked at only 2.2 percent during the relatively mild 2011-12 flu season.

The estimated rate of flu-related hospitalizations in the U.S. was 8.1 per 100,000 people, which is high for this time of year, according to Dr. Joe Bresee, chief of the epidemiology and prevention branch of the CDC’s influenza division.

I thought this year's flu shot wasn't even protecting against the bad strain going around this year? And what happened to the universal flu shot that was supposed to cover all flu strains? C'mon scientists!

It's on the way. But if a good chunk of the mouth breathing public don't get it, then the virus will mutate and adapt to this new vaccine even quicker.

Article says the one they are seeing in Mass is covered by the current shot. Takes 10-14 days to be effective though.

I got the shot in October. Haven't gotten sick this year despite the fact that it seems to be going around here.

No Autism either.

I wish they had a shot for the common cold. I don't care about the flu, the odds of getting it are slim, and even if I do, it only lasts like a day. I caught another stupid cold, these tend to drag on for weeks or even months. Rather have the flu than a cold.

You think the flu lasts only a day and isn't a big deal?

12 hours of hell and power puking, 12 hours of sleep, a day or so of recovery, then back to normal. They call it the 24 hour flu for a reason. It generally last's 24 hours. I rather go through that then have a runny nose, coughing, sneezing, headache, sinus congestion, etc... dragging on for weeks and weeks.

The flu is overrated, it's not as bad as the media wants you to think. There are many worse things you can catch such as strep throat, a cold, shingles, C Diff etc

They don't call influenza the "24 hour flu". Symptoms generally last from 4-7 days if you have the flue.

The flue is a whole other story. If you don't contain that properly you can even die of CO poisoning.

All the times I've gotten the flu or seen someone have it, they were only out for a day, maybe 2 at most. Usually take a day off work to rest. I got the flu a couple times and typically I'd only miss 2 days of work. Rather go through that and be up and running 100% within 2 days at most, than have a cold that keeps dragging on forever.

Were you or they actually tested for influenza or did they just come down with a cold for the day and mistakenly call it the flu? Because it sounds most like the latter.

You've probably never had influenza.

Imagine a gang of truck drivers beat the shit out of you and now your entire body is sore. You have a 104F fever, a headache, runny/stuffed up nose, and don't feel like moving. After 2-3 days your fever begins to break and you start to recover. After about 4-5 days you start feeling like your old self again.

Sounds about right, and I rather have that gang of truckers beat me for a bit and get it over with than have a cold dragging on for weeks.
