Excellent. That would have been an abominable abuse of power, so it's good to know that it looks like he wasn't involved.

What're you doing? Accepting the results of a probe is no fun. Let's Benghazi this thing and order like 9 hearings and 3 more probes and then refuse to accept the results of all those because they don't line up with what we want them to say!

BRIDGEGHAZI.

Then we can say "we're just trying to get to the bottom of this, why are you saying more investigations are bad if there's nothing to hide!?".

Here are the key points

1. Wildstein, Bridget Kelly and Bill Baroni were in on the plan to shut down the lanes from the very beginning. This is what Wildstein is claiming in his plea.

2. The decision to shut down the lanes to the bridge was done to punish Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich for his failure to endorse Gov. Christie's reelection campaign.

3. The first day of school was chosen as the day to begin the lane closures specifically to maximize the pain on city residents and thus on Sokolich as part of a scheme of political payback.

4. There was a conspiracy among the Wildstein, Kelly and Baroni to, in the judge's words, "conceal[] the true punitive purpose of the plan" to close down access to the bridge.

5. Wildstein, Kelly and Baroni had a plan to refuse to answer Mayor Sokolich's requests for information and pleas for assistance and to direct others to do the same.

6. The statutes the charges come under are statutes USC 18.371 and18.241.

7. The plea agreement revealed today was prepared on January 12th, 2015 and signed by Wildstein on January 21st.
Oh *snap*

So Christie didn't know about it and was actually innocent?

It's pretty bad for him either way. Although there's no evidence that he directly ordered anything be done, when you have this many people close to you pleading guilty and/or being indicted you are either an incompetent hiring manager or you have created an atmosphere in your office where these kinds of acts are acceptable.

To me the most likely answer is that his office was very comfortable with the idea of exacting petty retribution against people who crossed him. It's just that in this case people took it too far and got busted.

The fact that people in his office apparently thought it was appropriate to use the power of government to attack their own constituents is pretty awful though.

Why didn't they just delete all of the emails, that's what a smart person would do.

Is it still possible Christie knew? Could they be taking the fall for him (and were very much a part of the scheme)? Or is it now known that Christie didn't know anything about it? And, if so, was it still a matter of business as normal?

NY is putting up with the same petty retribution crap from Cuomo to the Teacher's Union, because the Teacher's Union failed to endorse him for the election. So, legislation after legislation is being passed to "punish" the teachers, despite every expert saying the legislation had the opposite effect of what Cuomo was claiming he was trying to do.

Yes. The guy who pled guilty says there is evidence Christie knew about the lane closures as they were happening, but nothing has actually come out yet.

I would be hesitant to vote for Christy with the appearance of so much slime around him.

I don't think anyone is falling on a sword here. This kind of this is usually not directly ordered, it's just understood that that's how the Gov wants you to behave. I doubt there are any emails or texts from Christie telling his staff to do this, or acknowledging what was going on.

Everyone knows that when something is sensative you don't text or email, you pick up the phone. Phone calls are not discoverable. Phone calls don't sit on a server somewhere. Clearly this type of shit was so routine that it didn't even occur to the Port Authority staffers that there was anything to even hide. Amazing.

Right, wrong or indifferent, Cuomo's actions have apparently been legal.

The actions of Christie's staff obviously were not.

Fucking over one's political or bureaucratic opponents is an art form of sorts requiring a deft touch & cool headed judgement if it's to succeed. In that, they failed miserably.

Christie probably has a whole staff of thugs ready take out anyone that points a finger at him personally.
After all, this is New Jersey.
What will happen to Christie is unknown, but on the plus side he will NEVER ever no way in hell become president of our country.
And that is the good news you can take to the bank.

Probably a whole lot of truth in this.

When Christie came on the scene he appeared to be a breath of fresh air. In retrospect now he was never anything more or less than a thug living a thug's life. Now he's getting his just rewards.

I doubt they will ever get any solid direct evidence to connect him-too many sycophants around to take the fall for him. But his future is sealed, he will never amount to more than a talking head on the "news" channels as far as the national stage goes.

As others here are pointing out, given that people may be falling on their sword for him, he is an incompetent manager and/or nothing sticks; seems like he would be perfect presidential material.

Recent POTUS(s) seem to be able to exhibit this trait.

If Christie didn't know it's because he didn't want to know. And while I dislike Cuomo more than Christie, passing legislation is perfectly legal and above board. Intentionally closing lanes to punish a constituentuency might or might not be legal, but it certainly isn't above board.

Does "Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee" sound like sarcasm to you? This is why you should be careful with humor in e-mails. Some people might think that you're serious.

What they didn't realize, I suspect, is that the DoJ would have grounds for federal prosecution. Bad mistake.
