Gov Mark Sanford mysterious disappearance

I think those pointing out that Dems also cheat on their wives, seem to conveniently forget that Democrats don't typically run on a platform of family values, sanctity of marriage, etc., and thus we're not dealing with the same sort of hypocrisy. It's an awful thing regardless of who does it, especially so in John Edwards case, but the Republicans take it to a whole new level.

Cheating on his wife is a betrayal of trust in his personal life. Abandoning his office for a week to do it is a betrayal of trust and an abandonment of his responsiblities to the citizens of South Carolina in his public life.

Cheating on his wife while running on a platform of "family values" is unmitigated hypocrisy.

His wife can decide what she should do about his personal betrayal. The citizens of South Carolina can decide what to do about his public betrayal, and they can and should consider his personal infidelity and his hypocrisy as evidence of his character and fitness for office when they do.

They are both cheaters, though, with John Edwards ranking right up there with Newt Gingrich in terms of douchebaggery. Which is worse, forcing your [second] wife to sign unfavorable divorce papers while recovering from cancer treatment, or fathering a bastard child while your wife battles breast cancer? You be the judge!

The fact is, all politicians fall into this crap because many of them are power-hungry assholes. Anyone who tries to spin it one way or another politically is an idiot. For every Mark Sanford there's an Eliot Spitzer.

I personally find it funnier when Republicans do it because it seems more hypocritical, but Democrats who have extramarital affairs are really just as bad for betraying the public's trust. And really, anyone who cheats on their spouse is scum, public figure or not.

I think from a purely objective point of view, this type of stuff hurts the Repubs more than the Dems. The Dems don't try to pretend they are perfect, the Repubs do and have this whole moral high ground which they stand on. So it makes the R party more so than the D party look like idiots when 1 week an R is touting his family values and the next week he is caught with a lover.

Note to Repubs, drop the whole family values bullcrap.

I don't read that blog, I just did a Google search on Sanford's (wide) stance on gay marriage for fun, knowing what I'd find.

His private life is his own, except for the hypocrisy of pretending to have any moral standing to claim to know about the "sanctity" of marriage. FYI, another Google link showed he also is against civil unions.
