Goverment recommends thermostat set to 78 degrees

Christ, I just looked up what 78F was in celsius... my parents are elderly and when they have their heating set to 24-25C, I'm sweltering! Our heating is off once the outside hits about 17C (62.6F) and in winter I try to keep the indoor temp at about 20C (68F).

No AC in the UK typically because we would only need it for about two weeks out of every year.

Sounds like you have crap insulation or no vapour barrier.

Probably but it was built in 2009 so shouldn't be too bad. Main problem I have is the undersized HVAC system that has to run non-stop to maintain 80 degrees. But I cannot complain too much about that as I have had a bigger system in my garage that I got for free just sitting there for the last year because I'm too lazy to install it.

I thought about getting one but don't really see the need. My wife and dog are home most of the time so the thermostat is set at 74 F 24/7 all summer long. In the winter, it switches to 70 F 24/7.

To be fair, there are going to be outliers and yours is in this case. My message was intended for an empty house.

so let the house get to 90 then have the AC run from 5pm until 2am cooling the house? those are peak hours for power billing.

First, not everyone has variable pricing for electricity. A lot of folks are on fixed rates. Secondly, I don't quite understand you logic. If you're not home during the non-peak hours, why would you leave it on regardless? I assume you're going to use it during peak hours anyways once you get home from work.

I work shifts so a regular programmable tstat was not granular enough for me, so I just made my own.

I need to make the GUI look nicer one of these days, and I also want to get rid of the temp range thing and just make it do that internally. (prevents short cycling)

This. The wife's mri's in March...they billed us $10K. At the end of the day, I owed $1700....but fuck them.

My health premiums are high, the deductible is pretty hefty but they have kept me alive close to five extra years over my experation date. Mass General Hospital is one of the best places in the world. People come from around the globe & pay cash in full for cancer care here. I am grateful to get such excellent care.
