Should any body or representative of the us government, acting under its power, ever have the right to coerce someone into attending a religious service at a church?

If not, what should should the consequences be for person / representative that did the coercing?

Absolutely not, instant total revolution if it were ever tried.

Penalties? At a minimum the official should NEVER be allowed a position of authority or responsibility again. Personally, I'd almost consider execution (or at least banishment).

whats the underlying reason you are asking?

There is nothing wrong with somebody from government being an example and attending church for what its worth...

Your question sounds silly to me!

You have the freedom to choose, if the government asked you to go to church or you could not have "position" A, you have the choice to go to church or not.

No they should not have a right to coerce someone into attending a religious service.

If anything the government needs to ban the teaching of religion to young children. Their minds are highly impressionable and filling it with religion is only leading to the spread of what has become humanity greatest hindrance ( religion).

I believe the OP is referring to a judge who has been telling criminals who come before his court to go to church or go to jail during sentencing.

What a horrible thing. This judge should be removed from the bench. Scum like this man should not be in the position of power.

Yes another reason why I hate religious freaks in power.

Don't they sometimes make people go to AA meetings.....
Which is basically religous
12 steps

1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol?that our lives had become unmanageable.
2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

hehe

Also, alot of times they make people attend rehab centers....goodluck finding a non-christian rehab center in the midwest....yeah right....

What you mean. Evangelical Christians are low life scum in my book. They contribute to the downfall of society by spreading their crap.

Zendari response: You are free to leave the country if you don't like it.

My response: There are few crimes as heinous as this one, which involves both corruption of power, and infringement on the most basic freedoms.

If a Bushie wins in 08 then I think it is time for drastic measure.

"Bush-like" meaning "similar to Bush", just to clarify.

No, and the punishment should be removal from said public office, and the inability hold public office in the future.

Hmm, good point, but at the same time AA doesn't specify a particular Religion and most of the AA members I ever met were not particularly Religious. I'd agree though that a Judge in such a case should not specify AA exclusively, but provide a selection of options in which at least 1 or some are non-Religious in nature, just as long as the program(s) are proven effective.

If you know what hinders and what helps mankind then you have quite a worked out religion yourself. Not a good one though, because if it is true then knowing it is apparently a hinderance.
