for some bizarre reason sphinxnihps believes in aliens.

yet for some other bizarre reason he believes said aliens can't travel through space. not smart enough and not possible he says. he's studied all of them. he understands everything about the universe.

anything else we're missing about this thread?

Anyone who believes aliens from another planet visit our planet is clearly stupid.

Why is that? If we had the capability we would visit other planets so why wouldnt they?

I would say anyone who completely discredits every sighting is stupid for not realizing the chances of life more advanced than us to exist in the infinite volume of space is pretty high.

Sigh. Do I have to address this again. See my post here: http://forums.anandtech.com/me...ght_key=y&keyword1=UFO

Believing UFOs are actively visiting earth requires the following assumptions.
1. There has at some point been life off earth
2. That there is currently life off earth.
3. That there is currently life off earth but relatively nearby (in this galaxy).
4. That the nearby life off earth has evolved intelligence and still exists.
5. That this intelligent life has developed a scientific civilization (see whales / elephants).
6. That the life off earth and nearby with a scientific civilization has developed spaceflight.
7. That the current life off earth nearby with intelligence and a scientific civilization and spaceflight has noticed us.
8. That the current life off earth nearby with intelligence and a scientific civilization and spaceflight and that has noticed us has a means to get here in a timely manner.
9. That the current life off earth nearby with intelligence and a scientific civilization and spaceflight and that has noticed us and a means to get here in a timely manner has visited us yet refuses to make contact in a public way, preferring to kidnap rednecks.
10. That the current life off earth nearby with intelligence and a scientific civilization and spaceflight and that has noticed us and a means to get here in a timely manner and visits us yet refuses to make contact in a public way, preferring to kidnap rednecks has been able to be covered up by the government as easily explainable phenomenon.

I will accept 1-3 as extremely likely, 4 as possible and anything else as highly unlikely at best. Especially when the alternate explanation is "crackpots are seeing patterns where there are none"

Just as likely as the universe being created from nothing.

Don't forget, Science 3000 years ago would have called me crazy if I talked to them about Quantum Physics. That is only *3000* years ago.

It's really a matter of probability, no?

There are an estimated 10^24 stars in the universe... if you guess at the average star having 3 planets you get:
3,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

If 1 in a million planets can sustain life that leaves 10^18 life supporting planets:
3,000,000,000,000,000,000

If 1 in a million life supporting planets result in an intelligent civilization that leaves 10^12 planets with intelligent civilizations:
3,000,000,000,000

If 1 in a million intelligent civilizations develop long range spaceflight that leaves 10^6 space travelling planets:
3,000,000

The 1 in a million may be low, but the point is the universe is vast... unless you believe that we were created by God as a one-off, you have to admit that the numbers would seem to make other life likely.

Can you prove they did not visit? If not, then how can you call anyone stupid? This is a big ol universe and anything could be possible out there.

I can't prove Jack the Ripper did NOT invent a time machine and travel to the year 2951 where he got cybernetic implants and fought in the Third Martian War where he died a hero before being resurrected and returned to his orignial time in a different body in which he went on to become a pirate named One Eyed McGee, but believing that did happen just because I can't disprove it might make you stupid.

You boys are funny. You call people that believe in God stupid, then you try to prove the plausibility of another species traveling thousands of light years to come to Earth and stick their fingers in a rednecks ass. You kids aren't coming off as all that superior to me.

I think the thing people are underestimating the ability of life to spread, survive, and adapt. Our understanding of science is only a few thousands years at best and we've only had computers less than a century. Imagine if humans had another billion years on their hands to work at science and perfect it; the odds that someone could come up with ways to break the conventional barriers to cross vast distances of space are fairly high. Our detection of extra solar planets has only just begun; if a civilization had a hundred million years with technology like we have today, then I have no doubt they would be able to locate other planets with life on them and figure out a way to get there. Even moving at sub light speed, life could continue to spread.

Your point is? My point still stands untouched. Fast engines don't make up for an impossibly vast universe -- for the purposes of searching for others.
