GPA/Resume Quesiton

So I am working on my resume to submit online by 5 pm for a CD thing. Anyway, my degree audit report gives several different calculations for GPAs.

My in major GPA is 2.62, my overall GPA is 2.82, and my major GPA is 3.06. In major is CS courses only, overall GPA is everything I have done, and major gpa is my gpa calculated using only the courses that actively fulfill requirements for my major. my question is, would it be to use my major gpa for resume? Is it like, cheating or something?

I vote for not putting a GPA at all. If an employer asks you, then tell them.

I forgot to mention I am still in school, and this is to try to get a summer internship. I think since I am still in school I might need to have it.

I used my major GPA when applying for work, but I described it exactly as "Major GPA" on my CV. I don't really think employers care how well you did in your Medieval French Lit class.

Eh, I still wouldnt list it. Thats just me though, others may disagree.

This might just be my industry (biotech/pharm), but we generally regard omitted GPA as a low GPA. If we're still interested we'll ask for a specific GPA, but a lot of times it'll just push your resume to the "no" pile.

And what if it was a 'major only' GPA, if that is acceptable maybe I should start using that too.. its probably about a 3.5.

I think if you have a very high GPA in your major I'd put that down. I had a 3.86 out of 4.0 so that looks pretty good on a resume.

Yeah, I would. Again, it might just be my industry, but we really don't care about your scores in History of Rock & Roll class. I want to know what your GPA is in classes directly related to the work at hand.

It's true that it depends on the industry, here's what I've noticed for CS grads:

If you you list a GPA below 3.0, most places will automatically reject you. If your GPA is low, it's better to just not list it at all. Some places will still automatically reject you, but you at least have a shot at getting a phone interview if you have other good qualities. Remember, the purpose of the resume is to get you an interview; the purpose of the interview is to get you the job.

You mention that this is for a summer internship, if you get that it'll go far in terms of mitigating your low GPA. You should still try to get your GPA above 3.0 before you graduate.

my college resume had GPA overall (major): xxx(yyy)/4.0. As somebody who reviews resumes now, its good to see if the person is good technically (engineer) and if they can handle other subjects that don't entirely interest them as well.

No GPA as a college hire is generally seen as low, and usually not called in for an interview unless they were really outstanding during the 5 minute meet and greet, hand over the resume thing.

I think I can remember one of the resume rules regarding GPA is that if it's not required to list it and your GPA isn't spectacular, then don't list it. I wouldn't tell the prospective company unless they asked because it's just another benchmark they can use to compare you against other people.

So I guess the message is, if you don't have more than a 3.0 just don't go to college.
edit: or rather, If your GPA is less than 3 your degree is worthless.

Use your higher GPA that is relevant to the job position, omit all others.

You can put both your major and overall GPA if they aren't far apart or the position doesn't really rely on your major.

My GPA is less than 3.0 and I landed a pretty nice job. It's not like you're going to be screwed for life if you don't have a 3.0. I do wish I had given a bit more effort, though.

Yep, there are enough qualified people out there looking for jobs that companies do not need to consider the college screw-offs.

if you do put it, they may use that to quickly weed you out.

if its going to screw you, it will screw you whether you leave it on or off.

Yes, but if you don't put it on, at least it shows that you feel some remorse.

If it's for an internship, you should put your GPA down, what else will they go off of. I would put my major GPA in there.

Just make sure to have a good explanation ready for why your in major GPA is lower.
