I went to the local CC on Friday to check into coming back to get a degree.

I went there about 9 years ago when I graduated HS. I took 4 classes. I stopped going to 2 of them for several reasons.

Anyway, the counselor gave me a sheet with my grades from those classes.

Accounting - F
Mainframe something or other (part of this was COBOL programming) - D
English - D
Math (pre algebra type class) - B

I think they mixed up the English and Math grades as I am 100x better in English than math, but my memory isn't all that great.

So to the point about the GPA...
If I understood her correctly, she tells me that to transfer, need a certain GPA and that these classes will lower my GPA unless I retake them and do better the 2nd time around.

I was thinking of going for an English major. I definitely have no need to retake the mainframe class, nor do I want to. I'd rather not take the Accounting class again either.

It sucks that I'm thinking of going for something completely unrelated to the last time I was there or even after that amount of time without any other activity, that those classes still affect my GPA.

Tell them if they don't drop the grades and allow you to start over after 9 years you will just find another CC. Talk to the dean if you can.

You understand correctly.

Those classes will seriously F your GPA if you don't fix them

AND

They will stay on your transcripts forever.

Can you take classes at a different College/University?

I seriously think they messed that up. the only other possibility is that i just stopped going to that class as well as the mainfram and accounting classes. those 3 classes were day classes and i had them all on the same day. the math class was a night class.

so maybe since i quit the other 2, there wasn't much sense in going to english as well?

like i said, my memory isn't very good, but English is my strong point in school.

All you had to do was drop the classes when you stopped attending...

i probably could but it would most likely be more expensive. also, i don't think there are any other CCs around.

no, the grades i recieved are all my fault but i was surprised when she gave me the sheet with my classes and grades.

as i said, English is one of my best subjects in school and math is my worst. to get a good grade in math and a poor grade in English was really weird. i think they mixed the two up.

or maybe the reason i got the D in English is because I just stopped going to that class like the others.

No offense, but if you were a point or so away from passing English, why would you want to major in it? Performance is a good indicator of your actual interest. This is according to their records...I would assume that your memory of the grades is kind of irrelevent. If you were doing poorly in the classes at the time, you should have some indication of how well you're doing outside of grades on paper or memory of those grades.

Either way...was it time issues, lack of interest? To get those grades up you're going to have to devote more time than may be acceptable to you atm. Just an FYI, and again, not intended to criticize. Remember; college ain't for everyone (although it's becoming more and more necessary in the climate we live in...).

Of course those classes will affect your GPA if you decide to transfer them. Nothing stupid about it....what, you think a few years departure from them is enough to convince the college board that you are somehow smarter withought any tangible proof? Take them over. No reason not too if you're serious about getting back into it. Those grades show the enrollment board that at one time you had no desire/interest being in school. No reason as of yet for them to think youir attitude has changed. Take them over and prove that you're serious about it.

if you were to give me an algebra problem right now, i doubt i could do it.

A 4-year undergrad degree is nothing today. None of them mean anything. The point of undergrad is to jump through the hoops and get the paper with the best GPA you can. After that, you can do whatever you want. I guess it depends on where you live as well, but here in Chicago your degree doesn't matter, it's all about being able to sell yourself.

Yep. if the professor sees you have a lack of interest (also, most schools have pretty serious attendence policies), why should they assume if you cared about a D or not? I imagine your lack of attendence means you weren't turning in assignments? D- was pretty fortunate, I think...

College courses grade on a pretty simple system: You get a sheet on the first lecture describing points for the entire semester. You meet those assignments to earn your grades. Sounds like you expected the professor to glean your aptitude for the material in light of your lack of presence and inability to turn in assignments?

you must have reading comprehension problems...i've said several times in this thread that English is my strong point in school.

This was 9 years ago. I have trouble remembering what I had for dinner the past few days, let alone some classes i had no interest in being in at the time. at the time, i really did not want to be in school. i don't like school. i wanted to get a quick education and start working then.

now things have changed a little. i still hate school but i know i need to get out of my current situation.

i remember doing well on assignments the prof. gave out, thats why i was so confused when i saw the D. the only excuse i can think of was that they mixed up the grades or i stopped going to the english class as well as the other 2 classes.

I had a 1.4 GPA from Northern Illinois University. I plan on going back, but I'm going to have to get my associates through a community college first, then transfer in to get a fresh GPA.

I started off with a 1.6 gpa at a four year school. I failed microeconomics my first quarter!!
After two years, I had a 2.1 gpa. Then I transfered to a community college and got a two year degree. Then a year later I got a four year degree. Three years later I had a masters degree. My GPA in high school was 3.2. At the CC, it was 3.4. When I got my bachelors it was 3.3. When I finished my masters, it was 3.5.

The point is that you have to apply yourself and you can do it. And obviously attend all classes. Don't drop out.
