Does your GPA really matter when getting a job? How many of you put your GPA on your actual resumes? Just wondering.

I've been killing myself trying to get 'cum laude.' I realize pushing myself too hard during these summer classes is far too much. it's not
like a 3.67 is going to get me a job compared to having a 3.55. I put it in there anyways just to fill up space, but having a 4.0 would
even be better!

For the love of god I hope not.

But I am a double major, Is and Business MNGT. And what you, and I will also do, is put the higgest GPA your have. Like your Major GPA and your overall GPA. Most business students put there business school GPA on and leave off ther overall. My overall is like 2.3 but my Business GPA is closer to 3.0. Thats what I get for being a transfer student who failed physics. But I expect my Biusiness GPA to be around 3 by the time I get out with both degrees.

Its not really important unless u have something like a 0.5 (which means u pretty much flunk everything) Our career counseller never told us to put it on the resume unless it was over 3.0

(assuming you're talking about a recent graduate)

where i work (a government R&D lab) they won't even talk to you about a science/engineering position unless you have a high, verified GPA (or a graduate degree from a top school).

In that case I better raise my GPA, good thing I still have time. EE and a GPA past a 3.0 is freaking hard. Oh well gotta try somehow.

Actually they told us in our career seminar class that you should always put it on no matter how low, because if you don't they assume the worst anyways.

I too have been told by our campus's career development center to not put your GPA on there if it wasn't a 3.0 or higher. Mine is a considerable 'notch' below that right now, but I got over some personal academic issues with myself last month and am now reeling in close to straight As (yeah, I knew I could do it!...). On that note, maybe I'll just put my GPA for my last 60 hours of credit.

Yes it matters for your first job, but not after that. So if you have a low GPA you may have to take a crummy first job, build some experience and use that to show you deserve the better job.

To turn it around, imagine you are looking at two resumes from people with nothing but a degree, one with GPA of 2.7 and the other with 3.65 -- which would you ask to come in for an interview?

When I was reading resumes to hire [software] developers at my old employer, the ranking was high overall GPA, then high discipline GPA, then low GPA. However, low GPA + some good internships might win out over high GPA with no experience.

To confirm what spamela said, GPA does seem to be important in engineering positions. At General Motors in Ohio, they won't even interview you unless you have a 3.5+ GPA. Ack.

Yeah, I agree with Mindstorm. GPA is very important, atleast to get yourself an interview. I mean if you give your resume to a recruiter and he/she ends up getting over 1000 resumes.......GPA is one of the easiest ways they use to filter out people.

I mean once you get a couple of internships or other jobs to put on your resume to show expierence, the companies won't be looking at GPA as much. But GPA is one of the tools you are going to need to get you that interview. Either that, you have your friend/relative/parent pull some strings, but most of us don't have that luxuary, lol.

Some people might argue that it's not about GPA and it's about how much you know. Well thats partly true, because once you are in that interview(s), then it's your knowledge that you must use to demonstrate to the interviewer that you know your stuff. But the GPA/past expierence is what gets you that oppurtunity to show them what you got.
